Discover the incredible road cycling in Andalucia on this self-guided tour with quiet mountain roads, historic whitewashed villages and spectacular coastal scenery. Combined with carefully selected accommodation, historic towns and some of the most scenic road cycling in Spain, this tour offers a genuine taste of Andalucia both on and off the bike.
Your journey begins in Los Alcornocales Natural Park, following meandering roads through the largest cork oak forests in the Iberian Peninsular. Along the way, you'll discover a succession of beautiful pueblos blancos, the famous white villages of Spain that cling dramatically to hilltops and ridges throughout Andalucia. From the medieval streets of Jimena de la Frontera to the stunning settings of Zahara, Arcos and Vejer, each day offers a new glimpse into the region's rich Moorish heritage and timeless rural character.
The mountains gradually give way to the Atlantic coast where you'll experience the wild beauty of the Costa de la Luz. Long sandy beaches, traditional fishing towns and endless ocean vistas provide a striking contrast to the rugged interior of Cadiz. The ride towards Tarifa is particularly atmospheric, with sweeping coastal roads leading to mainland Europe's southernmost town, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and Spain almost touches Africa – a beautiful place to celebrate the end of one of the best road cycling holidays in Spain.
The road cycling in Andalucia is wonderfully varied, with challenging but achievable climbs that are rewarded with spectacular views across mountains, reservoirs and rolling countryside. Riders looking for a memorable challenge can tackle the magnificent Puerto de las Palomas, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful climbs in Spain and a true highlight of the week. Despite the dramatic landscapes, the route remains firmly within reach of regular cyclists, with distances and elevation gains that encourage you to savour the experience rather than simply conquer it.

Understanding Profiles

Use these profiles to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • Ascent / Descent in metres (vertical axis)

Click 'see gradient' to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • % Gradient (vertical axis)

White vertical lines indicate unpaved sections or slightly rougher terrain.

Please check the scales on both graphs, and both axes as they both may differ from day to day.

GPS units and navigation softwares produce different statistical information based on a number of different factors, so please keep in mind the information we’re providing here is meant to be an indicative guide only.

Gradients in particular can be difficult to measure consistently, and sometimes steepness shown can vary as much as 5-10% from what’s signposted on the ground.

Using both graphs, alongside the grading and terrain information provided, should however give you a good idea of how flat, bumpy or steep the climbing on your particular tour is going to be.

The roads are generally well surfaced, you may encounter small stretches of cracking. There are some meaty climbs taking you over 1,000m/3280ft, but there is plenty of time to enjoy the scenery on the way up. The trip is designed for the more laidback roadie with a good level of basic fitness.

Road Cycling Grade

Grade 2 - 3: Gentle to Moderate

Aspects of both our grade 2 and 3 holidays.

Average distances around 70-90 km with occasional challenging climbs.

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

You’re reasonably fit and ride frequently at weekends, sometimes staying on the bike for a number of hours at a time. You do enjoy an occasional challenge and quite happy climbing but you‘re unlikely to be found daydreaming about ticking off all the famous cols of the Tour de France. That said the prospect of tackling a semi-serious to serious mountain pass doesn’t fill you with dread. You enjoy the social aspect of cycling and look forward to the occasional coffee-stop as much as the riding itself. You have good control of your bike and feel confident in your skills to ascend and descend safely. Whilst you find a full day in the saddle fulfilling, you’re not obsessed and as much as you are looking forward to the riding on your holiday, you’re also looking forward to a little local culture and cuisine. Grade 2-3 would be a good option for you.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.

NEW! Andalucia - Sierras to the Sea FAQs

How difficult is the cycling in the Province of Cadiz?

The cycling in the countryside is moderately challenging with rolling sierras, whilst out along the coast the terrain is flatter and more undulating. This tour has been designed to appeal to a wide range of cyclists with achievable climbs, and you can choose whether or not to complete the biggest climb of the week – the Puerto de las Palomas.

When is the best time of year to cycling in this part of Andalucia?

This corner of Andalucia benefits from a long cycling season with a mild climate and plenty of sunshine. Spring and autumn are the ideal times to visit, while a cool Atlantic breeze also makes it possible to ride up until early summer. The advantage of a self-guided tour is that you can choose the dates that work best for you and your riding partner / friends.

Can you arrange a private or tailor-made cycling holiday in Andalucia?

Absolutely. We've been running cycling holidays in the Ronda region for many years and know the roads, climbs and villages exceptionally well. If you're travelling with friends, a cycling club or a private group, we can tailor the holiday to suit your interests, fitness levels and preferred style of riding.

Whether you're looking for a shorter break, an extended cycling adventure, a centre-based stay, point-to-point riding or specific routes and climbs, we can create an itinerary that works for your group’s specific needs. Our local knowledge allows us to design a cycling holiday that strikes the right balance between challenge, scenery and enjoyment, while taking care of all the faffy logistics for you. We usually recommend a minimum group size of 8 to 10 riders for our tailor-made itineraries. Chat to our team to find out more.

Can I hire a bike?

Yes, we have a range of high-quality hire bikes available on all of our tours that you can select at the time of booking (you can see more details about our hire bikes in the dedicated section above.) Or, if you prefer the flexibility to bring your own bike, this is also an option.

Do I need to wear a cycle helmet?

Yes. We take very seriously the duty of care we have towards our customers, and we will always ask that you wear a helmet. If you don’t own a helmet, then let us know and we’ll ensure there is one available for you. More about our helmet policy.

What bike spares should I bring?

If you’re bringing your own bike, it’s a good idea to pack basic tools (tyre levers, pump, chain tool) and a puncture repair kit with a spare inner tube in a saddle bag or day bag. If you’re hiring a bike with us, then we’ll provide you with tools and spares. If you run into problems with your bike or have a mechanical, we’ll always be available to assist.

Do you transfer my luggage and bike box?

Yes, our tours include luggage transfers so you can enjoy cycling without the need to carry heavy bags. If you’re bringing your own bike in a bike box or bag, then we will store and transfer it for you. Please let us know in advance if you are bringing a bike box – the size, make and model.

What if something goes wrong?

Self-guided doesn’t mean left to manage on your own. One of our local representatives will be there to greet you on arrival and help get you set up with your bike and navigation. Throughout your trip, we’re always available with local support and emergency phone support aswell, so whether there’s an unexpected issue or you’ve got a mechanical with your bike, we’ll get it sorted.

How do I navigate and know which route to follow?

We’ll provide you with easy-to-use navigation and you’ll be shown how to use it at your meet and greet on arrival. Across many of our tours, we use Ride with GPS or a similar navigation app. You’ll need to bring a phone or GPS unit for navigation. On some holidays, paper maps are provided. Holidays which mainly follow National Cycle Network routes or other designated routes have the benefit of clear signposting along the way.

Do you ride on busy roads?

Our tours are designed to stick to quiet and scenic roads as much as possible. There may be times when we ride on busier roads in some of the urban areas near towns or cities, but we recce all our routes carefully to avoid any kind of road that we would deem dangerous for cyclists. Your safety is our number one priority. You’ll find more details about the route in the terrain section above.

Can I do this self-guided holiday on my own?

For safety reasons, we only offer self-guided tours to two or more riders. If you’re a solo traveller, why not join one of our group tours? It’s a great way to meet likeminded people and we see lots of solo travellers joining our guided holidays.

Do you cater for different dietary needs?

Vegetarians and people with specific dietary requirements will be catered for – please let us know at the time of booking if you have any dietary requirements.
