Following the success of our cycling journey along the Kattegattleden on the west coast of Sweden, this tour explores the stunning city of Stockholm on the East Coast and the surrounding archipelago. A self-guided circular trip that offers a relaxed exploration of city, coast, countryside and island life, all at your own pace.

Your journey begins in cool Stockholm, often described as one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. Built across 14 islands and connected by 57 bridges, it’s a city full of green spaces, striking architecture, and a calm, welcoming atmosphere, setting the perfect tone for the days ahead.

From here, you’ll hop between islands by ferry and bike, exploring a region where land and water come together in stunning fashion. With over 30,000 islands and islets, the Stockholm Archipelago was recently named one of National Geographic’s top 25 places to visit in 2025, and it’s easy to see why. You'll experience a variety of scenery, from peaceful forests and quiet bays, to open coastline and sandy beaches.

Over 5 days in the saddle, you’ll cover around 220 km on a mixed terrain of quiet roads, cycle paths and gravel trails. Along the way, you’ll pass through nature reserves, along lakeside paths, and welcoming towns like Vaxholm, often called the “capital of the archipelago” and Gustavsberg, known for its pretty harbour and local character.

A standout is the island of Sandön, home to the village of Sandhamn. With its colourful houses, lively marina and long stretches of beach, it’s a place beloved by sailors, holidaymakers and fans of Nordic Noir alike.

Daily distances range between 30 and 55 km, offering plenty of time to take in your surroundings and enjoy regular stops. Between areas of quiet calm nature, you’ll find cafés, bakeries and waterside restaurants along the route, perfect for a relaxed lunch or an afternoon coffee with a view. By the end of the week, you’ll have explored Sweden’s stunning capital, experienced its coastal culture, and enjoyed a memorable journey through a landscape shaped by both land and sea.

This is a relaxed and rewarding cycling holiday that offers a fresh perspective on Sweden, ideal for those looking to combine gentle adventure with great scenery, local culture and charm.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Stockholm

Your adventure begins in Sweden’s effortlessly cool capital, a city built across 14 islands and wrapped in waterways. You’ll spend your first night in a centrally located hotel, making it easy to head out and explore all Stockholm has to offer.

Depending on your arrival time, hopefully you’ll have some time for a wander through the cobbled lanes of Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town, packed with colourful buildings and cosy cafés. If you’re in the mood for a bit of culture, the Vasa Museum or ABBA Museum are both close by, or head to the waterfront to soak up the views and watch the boats drift by. If museums are your thing, the Vasa or Fotografiska are both well worth a visit.

Day 2 Stockholm to Vaxholm

25 Miles / 41 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 400 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 400 Metres Approx.

After having your welcome meeting and bike fitting, today kicks off with a relaxed spin around Royal Djurgården, a leafy island right in the heart of the city and a real treat for cyclists. Quiet paths wind their way through meadows, woodland and along the waterfront, making it the perfect warm-up. Rosendals Trädgård Café is a lovely spot for coffee and fika.

Leaving the city behind, you’ll follow a cycle friendly route north weaving through the suburbs of Stockholm to Djursholm, where a short ferry crossing (around 20 minutes) takes you out to Bogesundslandet. Here, the pace slows right down as you ride through peaceful forest tracks and open countryside, following gravel tracks and roads through this quiet nature reserve.

Your day finishes with a ride along the road into the charming harbour town of Vaxholm, often called the “capital of the archipelago.” Colourful wooden houses, narrow streets and a buzzing waterfront make this the perfect place to end the day. Grab a cake in one of the cosy cafés, take a stroll through the old town, or sit by the harbour and watch the boats come and go.

Ferries today cost around 45 SEK (bikes go free, subject to space on board).

Day 3 Vaxholm to Fågelbrolandet / Värmdö

23 or 26 Miles / 37 or 42 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 400 or 505 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 400 or 505 Metres Approx.

Your day begins in classic archipelago style, surrounded by sparkling waters, islands, and the gentle hum of coastal life. Today’s ride offers two equally scenic routes, depending on how much pedalling (or ferry cruising) you fancy.

For an easy-going start, hop aboard the 09:30 ferry from Vaxholm to Lillsved on the island of Värmdö (around 50 minutes). The crossing itself is a treat, weaving through postcard-perfect islands as the archipelago slowly wakes up around you.

Once on Värmdö, you’ll pedal south along quiet country roads to Siggesta Gård, a lovely stop for a coffee or snack in the Orangery Café. From here, continue on peaceful gravel tracks across the island, with the option to take a short detour out to Bullandö Krog for homemade gelato and a sweeping sea view. As you near Fagerdala, the coast reappears and your route hugs the waterline towards the charming Strömma Canal. Cross the little bridge, and it’s just a few more undulating kilometres to your hotel, tucked away in a tranquil corner of the archipelago.

The alternative route today, for those after a touch more cycling, sees you taking the car ferry from Vaxholm to Rindö, a small island with peaceful lanes and lovely views. After the ride across Rindö, you’ll then catch another ferry across to Värmdö, where a short (but busy) 7 km stretch of main road leads you to Siggesta Gård where you join the same route as above.

If you’d prefer to avoid the busier stretch of road, we recommend the shorter Lillsved option, but do make sure you catch the 09:30 ferry from Vaxholm, as space can be limited in good weather. Our local team can chat you through both options at your welcome meeting and may be able to assist with ferry bookings.

Ferries today total approx. 45 SEK, and bikes are free to bring on board (space permitting).

Day 4 Fågelbrolandet - Sandhamn & Runmarö Loop Ride

32 Miles / 51 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 520 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 520 Metres Approx.

Your day begins with a short pedal to the ferry terminal, where you’ll board the boat to Sandön, one of the eastern-most parts of the archipelago, and home to the picturesque village of Sandhamn. This spot is one of the Stockholm Archipelago’s most beloved gems, and it’s easy to see why. The harbour is alive with visiting boats, and the narrow streets invite you to explore cafés, restaurants, boutiques and bars, perfect for a leisurely wander or a relaxing coffee break. You might choose to spend the day soaking up Sandhamn’s unique charm, maybe taking a dip in the sea, or simply sitting back to admire the stunning ocean views.

If you’re wanting a bit more riding today, you can hop back on the ferry to Runmarö, one of the largest and greenest islands in the archipelago. Here, you’ll cycle along quiet, scenic roads surrounded by lush woodlands and a remarkable variety of wildflowers, including 27 species of orchids. For a special highlight, consider making your way to Telegrafberget, the island’s highest point, where panoramic views stretch across the sparkling archipelago below.

Whichever option you choose, your day will end with a ferry ride back to the mainland, followed by a gentle cycle to your hotel at Fågelbrohus. If you’re only visiting Sandhamn, ferry costs are around 200 SEK, while adding Runmarö will cost an additional 100 SEK. Bikes are free to bring on board, subject to available space.

Today is all about embracing the beauty and atmosphere of the Stockholm Archipelago, whether you’re relaxing on the beach, exploring charming villages, or cycling through lush nature, it’s a perfect day to slow down and soak it all in.

Day 5 Fågelbrolandet to Saltsjöbaden

35 Miles / 56 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 630 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 630 Metres Approx.

Today, you’ll leave the calm, countryside surrounding your hotel in Fågelbrolandet and cycle west through a diverse mix of beautiful rural areas, coastline, coastal towns and local communities. You’ll cycle around Farstalandet, where you can stop for a lovely coffee and a browse of the modern art at the museum Artipelag.

Riding along the coastline, you’ll soon arrive at the quaint town of Gustavsberg, beautifully located by the water, where you stop for lunch in the one of the cozy harbour cafés. For a touch more culture, swing by the Porcelain Factory founded in 1825 and check out some classic Swedish porcelain and soak up some history.

From Gustavsberg, it’s over the Skuru Bridge and onto more quiet coastal roads and through some rural parks, leading you to Saltsjöbaden. This picturesque peninsula, deep in the Stockholm Archipelago, is where your hotel awaits, right by the sea. The perfect place to unwind, explore the harbour and soak in the laid-back vibe after a day in the saddle.

Day 6 Saltsjöbaden to Stockholm

19 Miles / 31 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 340 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 340 Metres Approx.

Leaving behind the seaside charm of Saltsjöbaden, you’ll soon find yourself riding into the stunning natural playground of Erstaviken. You’ll roll along quiet gravel paths, passing Erstaviksbadet, (a great spot for a refreshing early swim).

You pedal on through the Nacka Nature Reserve, a car-free zone where the calm and quiet take centre stage. Here, peaceful forests, sparkling lakes, and plenty of wildlife set the scene for a truly chilled-out ride towards Stockholm.

As you near Stockholm, the route hugs the water’s edge, cruising past the city’s central islands: Södermalm, Långholmen, and Kungsholmen. Don’t miss a quick stop on top of Västerbron bridge, those panoramic city views, framed by water, are absolutely worth it. Then, it’s into the heart of Stockholm, riding along the shores of Riddarfjärden and passing iconic spots like Stockholm City Hall, the Swedish Parliament sitting pretty on its own island, and the majestic Royal Castle.

Your adventure wraps up at your centrally located hotel, the perfect place to kick back and soak in the memories of a week spent exploring the natural beauty, cosy villages, and vibrant city vibes of the Stockholm Archipelago.

Understanding Profiles

Use these profiles to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • Ascent / Descent in metres (vertical axis)

Click 'see gradient' to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • % Gradient (vertical axis)

White vertical lines indicate unpaved sections or slightly rougher terrain.

Please check the scales on both graphs, and both axes as they both may differ from day to day.

GPS units and navigation softwares produce different statistical information based on a number of different factors, so please keep in mind the information we’re providing here is meant to be an indicative guide only.

Gradients in particular can be difficult to measure consistently, and sometimes steepness shown can vary as much as 5-10% from what’s signposted on the ground.

Using both graphs, alongside the grading and terrain information provided, should however give you a good idea of how flat, bumpy or steep the climbing on your particular tour is going to be.

The Cycling

Terrain

You’ll be pedalling along a lovely mix of quiet roads, scenic gravel paths and well-marked cycle paths, ideal for soaking up the archipelago’s relaxed pace. A fair proportion of the route is traffic-free, with only the occasional stretch alongside busier roads, particularly when connecting between islands.

If you opt for the longer route on Day 3, you’ll encounter around 7 km on a busier stretch of road. Day 4 also includes a short stretch of main road (around 3 km each way between Fågelbrohus and Stavsnäs). We encourage you to take extra caution on these sections.

Expect a mix of smooth tarmac and gravel tracks, winding through forests, hugging the coastline, and offering regular glimpses of glittering water. The terrain is gently rolling, with a few short, punchy climbs thrown in to keep things interesting.

We’ve graded this holiday as a level 3, making it a great fit for cyclists with a reasonable level of fitness who are comfortable with a few longer days in the saddle, feel comfortable on some short sections of rough and loose gravel surfaces and short climbs.

We recommend hybrid or e-bikes for the best experience, and we can provide either. Gravel bikes are also suitable (and are available on request). We wouldn’t recommend road bikes.

An e-bike would be a great option, and highly recommended, for those looking for a boost up those cheeky climbs and to help tick off some quick miles on some of the longer days.

Leisure Cycling Grade

Grade 3 : Moderate

Distances generally between 20-45 miles / 32-72 kms per day

For the leisure cyclist with a good level of physical fitness

May include some steeper, cheeky climbs

Possibly sections of varying terrain (eg. forest tracks, gravel paths etc).

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

Although you may not cycle every day, you do keep yourself relatively fit and enjoy getting out on your bike at the weekend. Your preference is perhaps for flatter to rolling terrain, but you don’t mind tackling some hills, and some steep climbs if you can take it at your own pace. For those happy to tackle those ups and downs, and possibly some sections of varying terrain (eg. forest tracks, gravel paths etc) we’d recommend our grade 3 trips. We’d generally expect those on a Grade 3 holiday to have a decent level of physical fitness and be comfortable riding on consecutive days with some longer days in the saddle.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.
