Fabulous! The team organized the vacation very well, all we had to do was show up. We all loved the trip, kids and adults enjoyed running on the beaches and visiting castles.
Itinerary
Your cycling adventure begins in the picturesque market town of Alnwick. Alnwick is easily reached by train, with Alnmouth station on the East Coast Main Line just a short distance away.
We will arrange to meet you at the train station and transfer you to your accommodation. Alternatively you can drive to Alnwick and you will be able to leave your car at or near the accommodation for the duration of the trip. For those arriving early there are plenty of incredible local attractions to visit.
Choose from Alnwick Castle and the famous Alnwick Gardens, or relax and enjoy the town with a riverside walk and your choice of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Your representative will go through the route with you and supply your information pack (either on arrival if transferring from the station, or the morning of Day 2 if driving.)
Day 2 Alnwick to Howick
- Meals: Breakfast
- Ascent: 135 or 250 Metres Approx.
This morning, you’ll leave Alnwick via a newly built cycle path, running alongside the newly restored Aln Valley Railway, where you might catch sight of a passing steam engine! It’s a memorable start to your journey, soon leading onto quiet lanes and well-surfaced tracks. Today you can choose between two routes: a longer loop through the countryside to the castle town of Warkworth before reaching the coast at Alnmouth, or a shorter, more direct ride straight to Alnmouth.
After a wander around this scenic coastal village, you pedal along the fabulous Northumberland coast and through the hamlet of Boulmer. Once a notorious smugglers’ haven in the 18th and 19th centuries, Boulmer drew traders from across Northumberland and the Borders dealing in contraband goods.
The route goes slightly inland from here and passes by Howick Hall Gardens and Arboretum which is well worth a visit. Howick Hall was the seat of the Prime Minister, Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, after whom the famous tea is named. Legend tells that the first Earl Grey blend was created by a Chinese mandarin, using bergamot to balance the lime-rich water at Howick. Twinings later popularised the blend, which remains world-famous today. The gardens and arboretum are simply stunning and have been rated by the BBC Gardener’s World Magazine as one of the top 5 coastal gardens in the country.
Continuing along the coastal route for a short distance, you pass the sweeping white beach of Sugar Sands before you arrive at your accommodation in Howick.

Day 3 Howick to Seahouses
- Meals: Breakfast
- Ascent: 155 or 205 Metres Approx.
Today you can either ride directly to Seahouses, with its easy boat access to the Farne Islands, or extend your day with a detour to the quaint fishing village of Craster and the white-sand beach at Low Newton
After breakfast, you’ll follow the coastal route with sweeping views of the North Sea, soon reaching Craster, famous for its traditional smokehouses that produce the renowned Craster kippers. If you have been making good progress then why not visit the eerie Dunstanburgh Castle? This ruined 14th century fortress is only accessible on foot.
The route then takes you further inland through beautiful countryside and you reach the small village of Embleton, from where you can choose to head east, down to the white sandy beach at Low Newton, with stunning views back over Dunstanburgh Castle. Back in Embleton, you head further north again, and it won’t be long before arriving at the seaside village of Seahouses. Seahouses is the largest village on this coastal stretch and is home to an abundance of shops, pubs and cafes as well as award winning fish and chip shops. There are arcades, museums, crazy golf… in fact, something for everyone. There has been a harbour here since 1318 and it remains busy today with a number of tour boats taking visitors to the nearby Farne Islands alongside the local fishing boats.
Why not stay an extra night in Seahouses to give you time to enjoy the many attractions within easy reach? If you can, make time for a visit to the Farne Islands which are a haven for seabirds and seals. Spring is a great time to see the thousands of birds that nest on the islands. The islands also feature Longstone Lighthouse, once home to Grace Darling and her father. Grace’s daring rescue of nine sailors from the wreck of the Forfarshire in 1838 remains one of Northumberland’s most celebrated stories.

Day 4 Seahouses to Beal
- Meals: Breakfast
- Ascent: 235 or 355 Metres Approx.
Leaving Seahouses behind, you will cycle to Bamburgh this morning. Bamburgh, home to the mighty castle perched high on a rocky outcrop, also offers several cafés and a stunning beach, making it a perfect spot for a morning coffee break.
Leaving Bamburgh, the route turns inland along quiet country roads, passing the historic village of Belford before reaching your accommodation near Beal. If tide and time allow, it is well worth taking the additional 11-mile (17km) detour to visit Holy Island, otherwise known as Lindisfarne. With its sweeping beaches, dunes, castle, priory, and the Mead House where they still make the world-famous Lindisfarne mead, this tidal island is truly unique. It is also an important site in early Christianity and the place where the Lindisfarne Gospels were created in the 8th century. The island is only accessible by a tidal causeway, so visits depend entirely on the tide. Always check safe crossing times before attempting the journey. Subject to availability and a small supplement, it may be possible to stay on the island instead of near Beal. Please ask at the time of booking

Day 5 Beal to Berwick-upon-Tweed
- Meals: Breakfast
- Ascent: 140 Metres Approx.
After your final breakfast of the ride, you set off for Berwick-upon-Tweed. If you didn’t visit or stay on Holy Island the previous day, you may want to do so today. Just be sure to check the tide times! Today includes a stretch of off-road cycling along the rugged clifftops north of Beal, before the route continues along the coast to Berwick-upon-Tweed, on the border with Scotland. After taking in the dramatic sight of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s array of bridges and famous fortified walls, you can meet your representative, collect your luggage, and hop on the train, or a transfer is available to whisk you back to your car at Alnwick.

Understanding Profiles
Use these profiles to see:
- Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
- Ascent / Descent in metres (vertical axis)
Click 'see gradient' to see:
- Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
- % Gradient (vertical axis)
White vertical lines indicate unpaved sections or slightly rougher terrain.
Please check the scales on both graphs, and both axes as they both may differ from day to day.
GPS units and navigation softwares produce different statistical information based on a number of different factors, so please keep in mind the information we’re providing here is meant to be an indicative guide only.
Gradients in particular can be difficult to measure consistently, and sometimes steepness shown can vary as much as 5-10% from what’s signposted on the ground.
Using both graphs, alongside the grading and terrain information provided, should however give you a good idea of how flat, bumpy or steep the climbing on your particular tour is going to be.

The Cycling
Terrain
You’ll be riding on a mixture of flat and undulating terrain, on paved river and seaside promenades and purpose-built cycle paths, as well as along minor urban roads and rural lanes, which are usually quiet but may be busier in the summer at weekends and during holidays.
There are also a few off-road sections, with paths across grassy fields or farm tracks, including a section along a muddy clifftop track, which is unsuitable for road bikes. The route can be ridden on almost any type of bike other than a road bike.
It is possible to use an e-bike on this holiday. There are no significant climbs or passes on the route, but if you are wanting to spend more time exploring the towns and villages along the way then an e-bike is a great idea to cover the miles a little quicker. Please note, e-bikes are generally heavier than standard bikes, so this is worth considering when handling the bike over any rough / uneven terrain.
These easy to follow routes are place to place so, it’s worth noting, if you’re travelling with children the whole family must be able to ride the distances stated on the trip notes. Children must be comfortable riding on roads, on undulating terrain, and on some small off-road sections.

Northumberland Coast uses a part of the National Cycle Network, a route from the charity, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, who are working to make it easier for everyone to cycle in the UK. Skedaddle will donate to Walk Wheel Cycle Trust for every mile that you and others ride on this route with us. If you fancy donating more to Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, you can choose to make your own donation for the development of the National Cycle Network when you make a booking with us.
Family Cycling Grade
Aspects of both our grade 1 and 2 trips
Suitable for those looking for a relaxed ride
Occasional ups and downs
Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!
For more information about our grading system click here.
Is this suitable for you?
Trips that are graded as a 1-2, will have aspects of both our grade 1 and grade 2 trips. These tours are still suitable for those looking for an accessible cycling holiday with manageable daily distances, along predominately flat terrain, however there will be some days / sections where we’d expect you to be up for a slightly cheeky challenge. It might be that the distances are a little longer on some days or that the terrain is slightly more undulating, but the rides are still relaxed and manageable for families who are generally fit and healthy.
For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.
Cycling from Alnwick to Bamburgh was superb! I found the team extremely helpful.

Helen, Worcestershire, UKEverything went like clockwork! From the first call to Saddle Skedaddle, indicating I wanted to create a bespoke package, I found the team extremely helpful! And from then, everything went like clockwork. All the planning, agreeing the route, booking and preparation for the routes with trip notes etc was all very good. Cycling from Alnwick to Banburgh was superb!
Anna, UKI can't wait to go on the next one...Too many favourite days for different reasons. I actually loved our first day of cycling for the variety of terrain and beautiful views, ending up in such a wonderful location. I would wholeheartedly recommend! It was exactly what I was hoping for. The Northumberland scenery is mind blowing, people are really lovely, and the food is incredible. The route is clear and the app makes it so easy to follow. I can’t wait to go on the next one.
Catherine, London, UKResponsive and helpful...We really enjoyed the ride out to Lindisfarne! Our Skedaddle representative was responsive and helpful. He reassured our daughter and got her a helmet that fitted, kept us informed of the cases and was always there in good time. He was helpful and polite throughout the week.
Alison, Derbyshire, UKSo helpful!Saddle Skedaddle were very helpful all the way!
Elizabeth, Argyll and ButeLots of good stops...Quiet country lanes and coastal paths were just the ticket with two kids 12 & 9. Lots of good stops for ice cream and the beaches at each destination gave us something to do after a morning cycle. Definitely nothing too strenuous for any of us!
Nicola, ManchesterIt just kept getting better and betterLoved Alnwick. Loved Craster and exploring Dunstanburgh castle. Loved Seahouses and the beaches there at St Aidans. The Beach house hotel was wonderful (clean rooms, good shower, good breakfast, great service). Loved cycling out on the causeway to Lindisfarne. Loved the beaches between Beal and Berwick. It just kept getting better and better.
Christina, USAFabulous. The Northumberland self-guided bicycle tour was fabulous. The Skedaddle team organized the vacation very well: all we had to do was show up. Our group included 3 adults and two kids age 4 and 5. The 5 year old bicycled solo the whole way, only needing a push for rare uphills. The 4 year old was on a tag-a-long bicycle. We also pulled a little trailer, just in case one of the kids went on strike, but we only used it for carrying snacks. We all loved the trip. The mix of country farmland, castles, and ocean were terrific. Kids and adults enjoyed running on the beaches and visiting castles. The hotels were comfortable and clean with good dinners every night. The kids regularly ask to go back to England! We are looking forward to another Skedaddle adventure soon.
NicolaEach day was excellent...Each day was excellent and offered different experiences. Our first day Alnwick to Lower Newton was wonderful – great scenery and food stop in Alnmouth.
