In its short history, the sport of mountain biking has been shaped by a constant flow of technological advances, some of which have stood the test of time while others have been relegated to the vault of ideas that with hindsight are laughed about over a cold beer at the end of a summer ride.
Disc brakes, suspension and dropper posts make every ride more fun. Tubeless tyres have almost eliminated flats from everyday rides and modern bike geometry and tyre technology make tackling technical terrain safer and more enjoyable. On the flip side of the coin no-one wants to go back to the days of v-brakes, flex-stems and narrow flat bars.
Why electric mountain bikes
Pedal assisted electric mountain bikes are the latest wave of advancements, a concept that has created a huge amount of debate and discussion in all areas of the mountain bike community. These bikes have opened the door for riders with all sorts of limitations to continue riding despite age or injury. For fitter, more experienced riders eBikes allow us to commit to big days out knowing that we’ll arrive at the top of the descents fresher and ready for that amazing singletrack.
We’ve thought long and hard about whether to start offering electric mountain bike holidays. The demand from customers recently has made it clear to us that these bikes are being embraced by the mountain biking community in ever greater numbers and that our customers are keen to take advantage of these bikes on their mountain biking adventures. Therefore in 2019 we are introducing a small range of itineraries that have been specifically selected and honed to suit the capabilities of these bikes.
We strive to deliver great holiday experiences for every single one of our riders. A big part of this is ensuring that we maintain compatible groups on every holiday, whether the riders decide to take some assistance or to ride completely under their own steam. For this reason we have chosen not to offer eBikes on all our trips, but to offer specific departures where the entire group will be piloting an assisted bike. Riders looking for the opportunity to challenge their fitness in the mountains can choose from our full range of spectacular mountain biking journeys.
About the bikes
As biking specialists we understand that the quality of your bike makes a huge difference to your overall holiday experience. Here in the UK we are offering weekend holiday opportunities for riders to bring their own electric mountain bikes along and share the riding experience with other like-minded bikers. In Europe we have partnered with carefully selected local bike hire providers to supply bikes that meet our high expectations. This means you will be supplied with a bike fitted with a reliable motor system and high-spec components. Perfect for getting you up and down the hills safely and with a big smile on your face.
We ask our expert
Our chief guide Steve Woods has been riding around the world with us for more years than he will admit to and now is an enthusiastic electric mountain bike convert, lucky enough to have tested out a Giant full battery powered stead, playfully referred to as ‘Ebeneezer’. Here’s what happened when we caught up with him to find out more…
– Tell us about your electric bike experience?
“I’ve ridden an ebike for a couple of years now and am still amazed by how much further it allows me to ride, distances further than I’ve ever managed before on demanding terrain! Living with the Lake District National Park on my doorstep means I can regularly ride some of the toughest and fun trails in the UK. Only recently, I ended up on an off road ride of 67 miles (extended because I was having so much fun and feeling so fired up!)… that’s basically a weekend’s worth of riding in one day, which is pretty much unheard of. I was absolutely jiggered by the end (it took me half an hour just to get myself back together). Although I was on empty, the bike still had nearly 20 miles of charge left…”
– Are electric mountain bikes for all riders?
“There’s a misconception that electric bikes are for people that need some extra help in the saddle. That is true for some, but there are also a lot of experienced riders joining the ebike revolution, because it helps them see and do more during their ride. Our new electric mountain bike Holiday range has been specifically designed for mountain bikers comfortable on technical terrain, who are eager to ride longer distances and experience some classic destinations in a brand-new way.”
– Any parting words of wisdom?
“An electric bike won’t turn you into an amazing rider, but it can empower you to go further. If you’re expecting these bikes to suddenly enable you to conquer technical terrain, you’re going to be disappointed. What they will offer you is the opportunity to tackle way more technical terrain, at your level, during each ride.”
As keen bikers and outdoors people we are passionate about sharing the amazing wild spaces of the world with our guests. Our new Electric Mountain Bike Holidays are the latest opportunity for riders of all experience levels to enjoy a phenomenal Skedaddle mountain biking journey.
