A cycling holiday in Italy designed for families looking for a week of gentle riding in a refreshing, alpine lake-strewn environment, with fun activities for the whole family along the way. You'll have time to enjoy fantastic lake-side locations with opportunities to swim and of course, delicious Italian food & icecream.
For the first few days you'll be based at Lake Ledro, north-west of Lake Garda, set in the mountains below Mt Tremalzo. Favoured by the Italians, this idyllic location has everything for a family summer holiday: cycling paths, family facilities and pizzerias all set in a lush green alpine valley.
Cycling to Lake Garda mid week, the riding will take you along Valle di Sarca to Lake Clavedine, exploring beautiful vineyards, orchards and mirror-like lakes with the ever-present dramatic rock faces either side of you the whole way, the perfect backdrop for a day out on your bikes.
The cycling adventure continues and a ferry trip will take you across the lake to Limone, allowing time in the morning to explore this lovely lakeside town. Here, you can try out the brand new cyclepath along the lakeside, which is one of the most lovely cyclepaths we've seen. Back in Limone, you'll take the second ferry down to Peschiera, your final base for the last two days in Italy.
You will end your ride south of the lake, at Peschiera. An ideal location to explore the lake and surrounding rolling hills through quiet country lanes and picturesque vineyards, stopping to visit Castellaro Lagusello and Sigurtà Garden Park. Views of the lake are absolutely breathtaking, and there is no better way to finish the day than by settling down with a tasty Italian Gelato or a dip in the lake.

Every single day of the holiday was good, but our favourite was the final cycling day, Arco was lovely and very scenic. We would without a doubt recommend a Skedaddle holiday.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival into Verona Airport - Transfer to Lago di Ledro

Following your arrival into Verona (VRN) airport, you will be transferred to your delightful accommodation in the Valley di Ledro, located North of Lake Garda (approx. 1h30 minutes). This idyllic valley, set between high mountains and a small alpine lake, is an ideal base for the first part of your trip.

You will be met by your local representative who will hand over bikes (if renting) and talk your through your cycling holiday in this stunning region.

Day 2
Loop Ride - Ledro Valley
12 Miles / 20 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 250 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 250 Metres Approx.

A great start to this cycling holiday as we take you on a meandering journey on cycle paths along the Ledro Valley.

Setting off not far from the lake, the cycle route takes you along the valley passing through the quaint Tiarno villages, with their narrow streets and small piazzas. With plenty of time, you can ride to the lake and enjoy an afternoon swim at one the many family-friendly beaches.

A great Italian gelateria is within walking distance from the lake, as well as a selection of pizzerias and restaurants.

Day 3
Loop Ride - Ledro Lake and Malga Cita
10 Miles / 15 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 320 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 320 Metres Approx.

Today’s ride will take you to Malga Cita. A “malga” in Italian is an “alpine hut“, normally associated with a prairie where animals graze. Leaving the lake side, you’ll take a lovely country lane up an alpine valley, surrounded by tall mountains and forests.

On the way to Malga Cita, leaving your bikes, you’ll follow a well-marked path to Ledro Land Art within the Forest of Pur. Here you’ll discover art pieces that merge with nature, a really fun spot to explore with the kids.

Back in the saddle and you’ll ride to the end of the valley. Malga Cita is an ideal spot for a picnic lunch where you can enjoy the relaxing ambience of the surrounding mountains.

You’ll return back the same way, back to the lake and along the lake-side path to your hotel.

Day 4
Lake Ledro to Lake Garda
14 Miles / 22 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 300 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 300 Metres Approx.

Leaving this idyllic valley, today you’ll be heading towards Lake Garda. The cycle route is a classic for all kinds of cyclists so be sure to say ciao along the way.

Lake Ledro being higher in altitude than lake Garda, means the route has a downwards bias so sit back in your saddle and enjoy the ride! The first section meanders through small villages, with the highlight being Ponale, an ancient military road that connected the two valleys, contouring the side of the lake, on a gradual descent. It is a classic spot for anyone visiting Lake Garda, as the views are completely stunning.

With big smiles, you’ll arrive in Riva, a bustling lake-side town and plenty of ice cream shops to choose from. A very bike friendly place, cycle paths connect various parts of town and the valleys around. You will be based near the lake for the next two days.

Day 5
Loop Ride - Sarca Valley
28 Miles / 45 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 370 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 370 Metres Approx.

A lovely ride through the outstanding Sarca Valley is on the cards today. A full day exploring the beautiful vineyards, fruit groves and mirror-like lakes with the ever-present dramatic rock faces either side of you the whole way.

The route follows a cycle path from Torbole and Riva to Arco, along the Sarca River. Crossing a Roman bridge in Dro, you‘re likely to see local children enjoying a swim in some natural pools of the Sarca River!

Next stop in Lake Clavedine, an idyllic location for a picnic by the cool lake. On your return loop, stopping in Pietramurata, you can do a little wine and / or ice cream tasting to finish of the day.

This is a great day of cycling mainly on cycle paths with some outstanding views!

If you wish to shorten your ride to 18 Miles / 30 Kms, why not stop off in Dro for an ice cream and then follow the route back to Torbole?

Day 6
Ferry to Peschiera - South of the Lake
12 Miles / 20 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 50 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 50 Metres Approx.

Today you’ll journey southwards. After a morning ferry journey (approx 1 hour) you’ll have the chance to explore the charming little village of Limone, perched on the side of the lake.

From here you have the option of testing out the brand new cycle path along the lakeside, (which has already been described by some as the most scenic cyclepath ever created!) It’s an 8 km round ride, offering brilliant views of the lake.

Once back in Limone, you can board the next ferry to Peschiera (approx 2 hours). Your hotel is a short ride away from the ferry terminal, and ideally located to wander into the old part of Peschiera.

Day 7
Loop Ride - Mincio Cycle Path
19 Miles / 30 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 200 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 200 Metres Approx.

Leaving Peschiera, you’ll follow the leisurely cycle path of the Mincio, which links Peschiera and Mantova. Stopping off at Borghetto, officially named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, we recommend sampling the tasty tortellini, which originated in this region.

Back on your bikes, you’ll soon reach the Garden Park of Sigurta. Here you and the kids will have the chance to explore the educational play farm, with its labyrinth-like maze and shimmering ponds scattered through its lush garden.

Meandering through tranquil countryside, you’ll return to Peschiera.

Day 8
Departure from Peschiera - Transfer to Verona Airport
  • Meals: Breakfast

Time to say goodbye to this charming part of Italy as we transfer you back to the airport for your return flight home (approx. 45 mins).

The Cycling

Terrain

Around 70% of the route is traffic free, with the remaining 30% taking you along a mixture of cyclepaths (some mixed use / shared with pedestrians) and cycle lanes separating you from traffic.

Traffic levels on the roads remain relatively low as we have designed the route with families in mind, the only exceptions being when you ride into towns such as Riva del Garda and Peschiera where you may experience more cars on the roads.

You’ll be riding predominantly on tarmac, with some short sections on gravel and some grassy trails. Day 4 has a long section down hill with some fun easy off-road riding, leading you to Riva del Garda.

Day 5 will pose the biggest physical challenge with a climb to Lake Clavedine, but most of the route is pretty easy-going for those with a basic level of fitness.

With this in mind we recommend mountain bikes with at least 18 gears and wheels with a 27.5 or 29 knobbly tyre for this trip, or e-bikes for the grown ups. The route is not suitable for road bikes.

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

Is this suitable for you?

Trips that are graded as a 1-2, will have aspects of both our grade 1 and grade 2 trips. These tours are still suitable for those looking for an accessible cycling holiday with manageable daily distances, along predominately flat terrain, however there will be some days / sections where we’d expect you to be up for a slightly cheeky challenge. It might be that the distances are a little longer on some days or that the terrain is slightly more undulating, but the rides are still relaxed and manageable for families who are generally fit and healthy.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.
