Itinerary
After you have made your way to your hotel in Vienna, flight times permitting, there may be time for you to see the sights of Vienna, one of Europe’s most classic and picturesque capitals, at your leisure. Full of romance and history, it’s a wonderful city to explore!
You will have your personal briefing with a local Skedaddle rep the following morning.
- Meals: Breakfast
Today’s ride will take you through the national park of Donau-Auen. Here you’ll get to see the diverse flora, fauna and landscapes of the region. You will pass Orth castle and the village of Eckertsau on the way to Bad Deutsch Altenburg.Tonight you will stay in either Bad Deutsch-Altenburg or Hainburg.
- Meals: Breakfast
From Bad Deutsch-Altenburg or Hainburg you can make an excursion on the Roman bike trail (Römerweg) to Carnuntum – this archaeological park is regarded as one of the most significant archaeological sites in Austria. After Hainburg you reach the border with Slovakia and it´s capital city Bratislava, which is your next overnight stay. The shorter distance today allows plenty of time to visit the old part of this charming city.

- Meals: Breakfast
After leaving this bustling city, the route will be along bike trails, gravelly cycle paths and country roads, taking you past small border villages in Slovakia, all the way across the border into Hungary. On the way you will have the opportunity to visit the biggest river island in Europe; Rye Island.
The end of your cycling today is in the charming city of Mosonmagyaróvár (the city of 17 bridges). We’d recommend a short walking tour in the city before taking the train to Györ, your home for the night.
- Meals: Breakfast
Today you will be cycling towards Bábolna, which is home to a famous riding school. Founded in 1789, Bábolna has been a major location for horse breeding in Hungary ever since and the racehorses are bred in a splendid inner courtyard. The local ‘National Stud’ is known far beyond the town’s borders!
The last part of your ride takes you back to the Danube, on the way to the divided town of Komárom and Komárno, where you can spend your evening relaxing in the spa.

- Meals: Breakfast
Today´s route runs close to the riverbanks in the flat Danube valley. During the course of the day, you’ll be passing through different villages, admiring vineyards in the background. Those looking for a challenge today can choose a route over Tata but there are some climbs which require a basic level of fitness. Those interested in history should take some time to visit the Roman castle Kelemantia which is on the way. However, an absolute highlight today is Esztergom (also known as ‘Hungarian Rome‘): It´s basilica is the largest church in the country. Take your time looking around, before boarding a riverboat which will take you to your destination, Visegrád. Amazing views over the beautiful landscape of the so-called Donauknie will certainly pack a punch. (Please note: The boat does not run in April, September, October, or Mondays; we will include a train ticket instead during these times.)
- Meals: Breakfast
The Royal Palace and the castle of Visegrád are on the agenda today, along with the open air museum and the baroque old town of Szentendre. The first part of today’s ride will guide you again through the Donauknie, a beautiful section of the Danube bike trail, leading you towards today’s destination; Budapest.

The Cycling
Terrain
You will begin your trip with the longest day of riding at 65kms/ 40 miles. For the first half of the trip you will for the most part stick to flat, well maintained cycle paths. After a couple of days, you will notice a few more gentle climbs and descents along country lanes and secondary roads. When travelling in and out of cities you will be required to cycle through some traffic, but the majority of the routes are traffic free. Some short sections of the route are on slightly rougher terrain, including gravel, rather than asphalt. For this tour we recommend a hybrid bike, road bikes are not suitable for this route.

Family Cycling Grade
Aspects of both our grade 2 and 3 holidays
Suitable for those looking for some cycle friendly routes
Some modest climbs
Possibly sections of varying terrain (eg. forest tracks, gravel paths etc)
Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!
For more information about our grading system click here.
Is this suitable for you?
Holidays that are graded as a 2-3, will have aspects of both our grade 2 and 3 holidays. These tours are still suitable for those perhaps who have recently got into cycling, and offer an array of accessible, cycle friendly routes, cycle paths and quiet roads, however there will be some days / sections where you may have to tackle some ups and downs, the occasional steeper climb and perhaps some varying terrain (forest tracks, gravel paths etc). Suitable for those with a decent level of physical fitness, looking for some leisurely rides with occasional (achievable!) challenges along the way.

Engelien, DubaiA beautiful route...We loved the breaks in beautiful towns like Bratislava, Gyor, Esztergom and the cherry on the pie ending in Budapest. It is a popular cycle route following the Eurovelo 6 route, especially in the summer. But it was never busy and there were many options along the way to stop for drinks and lunch. A beautiful route following the river and farmfields with lots of sunflowers, corn and wheat.
We had a great time and ending the trip in Budapest is fantastic. You enter the city through a very green dense area with lots of trees, and suddenly more buildings popping up and more traffic and once you follow the river you see the famous bridges of the city and the Parliament before you reach the end of the route. The boat and train ride during 2 stages was a nice change and a way to stretch our legs and enjoy the scenery by watching the landscape just passing by.
