            Gravel Riding in Spain

            Ruta de la Plata

A gravel riding holiday in Spain offers freedom, variety, and a sense of exploration that few destinations can match. Imagine setting off from a quiet village in the cool morning sun, your tyres crunching over smooth dirt tracks, and spending the day weaving through olive groves, vineyards, and medieval hamlets. Each region has its own character, but the shared feature is that Spain’s vast network of unpaved roads makes gravel riding a great way to discover the country’s landscapes away from traffic and crowds. Our experienced local guides have outstanding knowledge of the best places to visit, both on and off the bike, and our app will keep you on track if you are going self-guided, ensuring that every detail of your holiday is taken care of.

The Ruta de La Plata is an ancient trading and pilgrimage route that runs from the Andalusian city of Seville through the lush valleys of the far northwest to the stunning city of Santiago de Compostela. It is Spanish wilderness gravel biking at its best, covering 1,000 km northward across the Iberian Peninsula through Extremadura’s untouched, wild landscapes. Riders face everything from long climbs and flowing descents to a variety of gravel roads, singletrack, and quiet lanes connecting remote trails and historic towns such as Mérida, Cáceres, and Salamanca. Along the way, ancient Roman roads, medieval centres, and dramatic mountain scenery showcase the rich diversity and history that make this adventure truly unforgettable.

The Spanish Badlands are fast earning a reputation as one of the world’s premier gravel cycling destinations, offering raw beauty, remote wilderness, and unforgettable, challenging riding. Starting in historic Granada, the route winds through dramatic sierras, castle-topped villages, and shifting terrain that ranges from smooth asphalt to rugged singletrack. Riders journey past towering clay cliffs, arid desert plains, and the snow-dusted Sierra Nevada before finishing by the sea in San José, where volcanic hills and coastal views mark a spectacular end to this truly world-class gravel adventure.  For more relaxed gravel option the Costa de la Luz and Cadiz Discoverer is perfect.

“Spain was made for gravel riding. Unfathomable space (in the eyes of a Brit) diverse landscapes, rugged mountains, and the otherworldly Badlands create endless adventure – it’s a place you simply can’t find anywhere else. Every ride takes you through incredible scenery, from wild plains to dramatic coastlines”

            Gravel terrain

            Who It’s Suitable For

Gravel cycling in Spain is suitable for all levels of experience. Beginners can enjoy well-maintained tracks in flatter regions such as Catalonia or Andalucia’s  valleys  and coast, while experienced riders will appreciate the technical challenges and elevation of more mountainous routes. The versatility of gravel bikes allows riders to adapt to different surfaces, from compact dirt to rocky paths, and select distances that match their fitness and ambitions.

            Terrain and Landscapes

Spain’s terrain makes every ride unique. In Girona, riders encounter rolling hills, river valleys, and smooth gravel connecting traditional villages. The Sierra Nevada provides a very different setting, with long climbs, alpine vistas, and high-altitude plateaus that offer a genuine sense of adventure. Along the Ruta de la Plata, a historic route crossing western Spain from Seville to Gijón,  cyclists follow ancient Roman roads and rural trails through cork forests and open plains — a dream for those seeking both culture and solitude.  Meanwhile sandy coastal trails along the Costa de la Luz offer the perfect blend of relaxed riding and cultural exploration

            Planning a Gravel Riding Trip

We have spent decades exploring the trails and tracks of Spain, long before gravel riding became popular. We strongly believe that gravel holidays in Spain are the perfect way to explore, as the country’s diverse terrain allows us to craft itineraries to suit every distance and difficulty level. Spain offers the ideal combination of challenge, stunning scenery, and cultural experiences. The country's climate means that spring and autumn provide perfect weather for gravel riding—warm but not extreme—and Spain’s southern coast offers comfortable year-round cycling temperatures.

            FAQs

What makes Spain such an excellent destination for gravel riding?

Spain offers an incredible mix of terrain, from smooth dirt farm tracks to high-altitude trails, making it perfect for every type of gravel rider. With a mild climate, quiet backroads, there will be a gravel cycling holiday that suits your skill level and desire for adventure.

Where are the best regions for gravel bike holidays in Spain?

Top spots include Girona, known for its scenic gravel loops and cycling community, and the Sierra Nevada, where long climbs and sweeping mountain vistas create unforgettable rides. The Ruta de la Plata is another highlight, tracing historic paths through rural Spain for a true point-to-point journey.

Is gravel cycling in Spain suitable for beginners?

Absolutely. Spain’s network of well-maintained gravel and forest tracks means an accessible mix of surfaces suitable for those just beginning with gravel riding. We’d recommend choosing an easier grade holiday and spending some time off-road on a gravel bike before your holiday so that you are relaxed and comfortable on your bike, ready to enjoy every minute of riding.

What kind of terrain should I expect?

You’ll encounter everything from compact gravel to dust tracks through olive groves and vineyards, as well as rockier mountain passes. Each region provides a distinct riding experience, whether it’s rolling countryside, technical descents, or smooth riverside tracks.

When is the best time of year for a gravel holiday in Spain?

Spring and autumn are ideal — warm, dry, and perfect for long days in the saddle. In southern Spain, including Andalusia and the Sierra Nevada, winter riding is also excellent, with plenty of sunshine and fewer crowds.

What should I pack for a gravel riding trip?

Having a well-prepped gravel bike with durable tyres, comfortable gearing for climbs, and space for hydration makes a big difference. Remember to pack lightweight layers, sun protection, and a GPS device or bike computer to keep track of your rides and enhance your adventure. Don't forget to wear gravel shoes that let you comfortably walk off the bike, so you're always ready for a coffee stop or a quick cultural exploration.
