Terrain
Mountain bike holidays in Spain never fail to deliver incredible riding variety thanks to its diverse geography, shaped by millennia of geological activity. In the north, the Pyrenees stretch from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, with jagged limestone peaks, glacial valleys and alpine meadows offering steep, technical climbs and natural, enduro-style descents. The terrain here is raw and untamed, ideal for riders who love rocky lines, rooty sections, drops and long singletrack descents. Further west, our Camino Primitivo holiday taps into a different side of northern Spain, following one of the oldest pilgrimage routes across remote mountains, forested ridges and ancient pathways—perfect for riders seeking a challenging point-to-point journey steeped in history and rugged natural beauty. Further south, the Sierra Nevada and Sistema Central ranges are drier and more rugged. These regions offer a huge variety of riding featuring loose trails over shale and granite.
The Basque Country and Picos de Europa mix loamy forest trails with open mountain passes, appealing to trail riders and those who love varied textures under their tyres. Out west and into Extremadura, rolling hills and red earth paths make for flowing cross-country routes and multi-day adventures.
Spain’s geological diversity creates endless trail types to appeal to all kinds of off-road adventurers. From easy hard-pack trails to high-mountain adrenaline-fuelled descents, every ride is packed with memorable moments.
Climate
Spain’s climate is one of the key reasons our local guides love riding there; it’s a year-round mountain biking destination. Every day is a riding day! The Pyrenees have cooler summers than the rest of Spain, ideal for high-altitude rides, while southern regions like Andalucia offer dry, warm conditions even in winter. Coastal zones benefit from mild Mediterranean weather, keeping trails rideable almost every month. Spring and autumn bring prime riding temperatures across the country, with less dust and vibrant scenery. Rainfall varies by region, but many areas see long stretches of sunshine. This dependable climate means more trail time for everyone
Routes
Spain has a wealth of varied routes and ancient trails. Riding through the limestone peaks of Grazalema and the vast cork oak forests of the Alcornocales our mountain bike route explores the Sierras, tracing a scenic route from the mountain town of Ronda to Tarifa on the wild Costa de la Luz. The landscape shifts from rugged sierras to sweeping coastal views across the Straits of Gibraltar. With flowing singletrack, quiet dirt trails, and white-sand beaches, it’s a laid-back adventure through one of Andalucia’s most diverse and beautiful regions.
A more challenging and totally unforgettable route is the Pyrenees Mountain Traverse, a mountain bike journey that crosses Spain’s central Pyrenees, where centuries-old trails weave through deep valleys, forested ridges, and the dramatic limestone peaks of Aragón. Refined by us over 20 years of riding, the route reveals remote, flowing singletrack, which is hard to find without an experienced guide. Passing through three distinct regions, the ride offers technical challenges, varied terrain, and jaw-dropping scenery.
Immerse yourself in the history of Spain following the Camino Primitivo, a lesser-known mountain bike route in Spain, tracing the original pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela. Starting in Oviedo, Asturias, this wild ride features remote mountain landscapes, lush valleys, and ancient villages. Riders tackle varied terrain from technical singletrack, drovers’ trails, to forested backroads, through the Cordillera Cantábrica. With epic climbs and thrilling descents, it’s a challenging adventure offering dramatic scenery and deep cultural heritage in Northern Spain, and it is a firm favourite with our Spanish guiding team.
