Holiday Information

A fun and flexible mountain biking tour from the impressive mountain town of Ronda in the high sierras to the lively historical town of Tarifa on the beautiful wild Costa de la Luz. On a mixture of enjoyable trails, dirt tracks and back lanes, this week of biking is at a relaxed pace, with an emphasis on appreciating this beautiful area by bike. That said there are some decent climbs to get your legs into and earn your post ride vino.
It’s a route that takes in many contrasting landscapes of this western area of Andalucia including the awesome limestone mountains of the Grazelema Natural Park, one of the first protected areas on the peninsular which was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 1977.
We traverse the Alcornocales Natural Park, a vast area of wilderness comprising the peninsula’s largest cork oak forest that disappear across rolling hills as far as the eyes can see. This Mediterranean jungle was described by Botanist David Bellamy as ‘perhaps Europe’s last real wilderness area’.
We arrive at the coast at the western end of the Straits of Gibraltar, a coastal reserve blessed with unspeakable vistas across to Morocco. The Costa de la Luz provides wild white sand beaches and dunes backed by pine clad forests topped by rocky outcrops circled by vultures.
Having triumphantly completed five days biking we will reach the most southerly point of continental Europe and the ancient port of Tarifa. This attractive fun-loving town is perfect for a final celebration, with its winding cobbled lanes filled with an eclectic mix of inviting bars and restaurants.
Along the route there will be chance to spend some rewarding time in Ronda to marvel at the Tajo Gorge, amazing Moorish architectur,e and maybe a visit to one of the oldest bullrings in Spain to learn about the history of this controversial love of the Spanish. A visit to the important Palaeolithic art of the Pileta caves, and a stroll around the ancient tombs of Bacinete, give you a unique insight into the civilisations that have lived in this fascinating corner of Spain.
Aimed at a wide range of riders this tour demands a moderate level of fitness and the only technical riding is of a modest level, very achievable by regular mountain bikers.
