This fantastic itinerary explores the many diverse trails of Terra Magica, the ‘Magic Land’ of Istria. From the rocky trails of the Skitaca peninsula to the cobbled streets of medieval Motovun this holiday will deliver great riding and breath-taking cultural delights.
Basing ourselves in Rabac, a small town perched on the shores of the Adriatic, we will make use of short transfers each day to visit many unique regions of the Istrian peninsula. The riding is varied and rewarding; with most days featuring interesting challenges in the form of short technical sections or the odd cheeky climb. We’ll visit the Parenzana, the most well-known cycle trail in Croatia, a converted railway linking the idyllic villages of Grožnjan, Motovun and Vižinada. Our local guides will show us the secret trails through these wild hills and beautiful nature reserves. With modest daily distances and a focus on fun routes this holiday is the perfect adventure for a wide range of riders.
Istria is one of Europe’s best kept culinary secrets and we will have the chance to sample the high quality, locally produced olive oil, truffles, honey and of course a glass or two of local vino.
With beaches, pools and walking opportunities on site this is the ideal tour for mixed abilities groups and non-riding partners, while keen riders can explore the local trail centre to add a few extra miles on any day.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Pula
  • Meals: Dinner

After collecting your from Pula airport we’ll make the 45 minute transfer to Rabac, our base for the week. Depending on flight times we’ll have time to build or collect our bikes before an optional pre-dinner swim.

Day 2
Kap Kamenjak
19 Miles / 30 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 500m

After breakfast we’ll have a short transfer to the southernmost point of Istria for our first ride of the week. In summer the cape of Kamenjak is one of the most popular tourist spots for beach goers and holiday makers. In the spring and autumn however the cape is a quiet and incredibly beautiful area criss-crossed with a network of singletrack trails. While relatively flat we get our first taste of the rocky sections that characterise Croatian singletrack. After exploring the protected reserve we’ll take lunch at a local tavern before heading back to Rabac.

Those keen to stretch their legs further will have time to explore the local trail centre or ‘Bike Park‘, a venue that has been hand built in a joint venture between the local community and the hotel that is hosting us this week.

Day 3
Učka - Plomin - Rabac
25 Miles / 40 Kms Approx. (+10 Miles optional)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 900m (+250m optional)

Our morning transfer will take us to the summit of Vojak, the highest peak of the Ucka mountains (1396m/4500ft). A protected nature park, the summit offers amazing views of Kvarner Bay and most of Istria! Starting our descent on tarmac we soon head off road onto dirt roads and some remote trails, generally descending to the foot of the mountain. There are some optional trickier singletrack trails, depending how the group is riding before an undulating dirt road traverse with stunning vistas of the islands of Krk and Cres. We’ll lunch in Plomin before making the decision whether to make our way home by bike or in the support vehicle. If we elect to ride the day will finish with a thrilling singletrack descent to the hotel.

Day 4
Labin loop ride
27 Miles / 45 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 650m

A short ride in the van will avoid the steep climb out of Rabac and drop us at the Dubrava Sculpture Park in Labin. The park is home to over 90 outdoor sculptures carved from local limestone by Istrian artists.

Today we will explore the countryside surrounding Labin, a region well known for the small-scale production of high quality olive oil, honey, lavender and the local red and white wines. We’ll be riding a mixture of quiet country roads, forest trails and hidden singletracks, leading through beautiful rolling hills and quaint hamlets. We’ll stop for lunch at an agriturismo where we’ll sample the local cheese, ham and produce from their own gardens.

Our routes leads us gradually back towards Labin where we can explore the Sculpture Park before returning to Rabac by car or bike.

Day 5
Grožnjan to Vižinada
27 Miles / 45 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 600m

Todays ride takes us back in time on a journey along the Parenzana, a converted railway perched on the hillsides leading to and from the medieval hilltop town of Motovun. The transfer today is a little longer (1.5 hours) but will be worth it to explore the most Italian region of Croatia. After a short ride we arrive in the old town of Grožnjan with its picturesque cobbled lanes. The town is often filled with the scent of truffles as they are added to all kinds of local dishes. Continuing on the Parenzana we cross bridges and pass through tunnels, all the while enjoying spectacular views of the valleys below. With good surfaces and gentle gradients the main challenge today comes in the cheeky climb to Motovun, perched high on a hilltop. We’ll lunch here with a little time to explore the old city wills, towers and gates.

The cycling continues on to Vižinada where we can enjoy an afternoon beverage in this wonderful old town.

Day 6
Skitača
22 Miles / 35 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, dinner
  • Ascent: 650m

Our week of riding culminates in a tour of the amazing Skitaca peninsula. Leaving Labin we head swiftly on an intricate network of ancient paths and tracks that meander through low scrubland and woodlands. By now we are well used to the rocky trails and a few technical sections will be tackled before an amazing flowing singletrack descent that carries us through ancient forest. From here we make our way to the village that gives its name to the peninsula, now home to one solitary full-time resident. Refuelled, we climb again on to the main ridgeline before our guides lead us back in to the woods on a series hidden trails and remote backroads. Eventually we arrive back in Labin before our last chance to sample the fun descent into Rabac. A cocktail overlooking the sea will be a fitting way to celebrate a great week of thrilling riding.

Day 7
Departure from Pula
  • Meals: Breakfast

It is time to say goodbye to Rabac, Istria and Croatia as we’ll drop you off at the airport for your flights home.

The Cycling

Terrain

The terrain experienced on this tour is varied and includes a mix of singletrack, jeep tracks, dirt roads and some tarmac sections. The majority of the trails are hardpacked and of moderate gradients however Istrian trails are often punctuated by short technical sections which can be rocky and loose at times and include short steeper climbs and descents. A small portion of the trip will be on purpose built mountain biking trails similar to UK trail centres and you will encounter berms and technical trail features (though these are all rollable).

The ideal bike for this holiday is a lightweight full suspension trail bike fitted with robust tyres. Tubeless tyres will be an advantage in avoiding pinch flats.

Please contact us if you are at all uncertain about the terrain.

Grade 3 : Moderate

Distances of 25-50 miles / 40-80 kms per day

Aimed at regular cyclists who have a degree of off road experience

Some moderate and difficult technical sections

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

If you have some experience of off road riding on a variety of terrain, and would like to do more, a grade 3 trip could be for you. These holidays give you elements of our higher grade trips but at a manageable level with sections of singletrack (narrow trails wide enough for one rider) and shorter steep sections (both up and down) which require more bike handling ability. A day’s ride can see you on the trails for around 8 hours (with breaks) and covering between 25-50 miles depending on the terrain. If you’re generally fit and manage to ride regularly this could be the level for you.
