E-BIKE HOLIDAY

This holiday has been designed as an e-bike tour allowing you to experience more on two wheels whilst riding with like-minded Skedaddlers. Confident cyclists will enjoy the boost from a battery for those cheeky climbs and longer distances. With less effort required on the bike, you’ll have more energy at the end of the day for off-the-bike activities. Remember to select your e-bike hire when you book your holiday with us.

BOOK NOW
We're excited to be introducing a brand-new e-bike leisure tour exploring the beautiful fjords of Norway.
Cycling along the Norwegian west coast is a breathtaking and rewarding experience for all kinds of cyclists. The region offers stunning landscapes, dramatic fjords, and (occasionally) some challenging terrain that will satisfy your adventurous spirit and offer plenty of exciting riding. Throughout this amazing tour we'll explore Norway's magnificent landscape, forged by millennia of glacial activity.
Ålesund, where we start our adventure, is one of Norway's most distinctive looking towns, and is packed with incredible architecture, set along the backdrop of the spectacular fjords. The town is famous for its Art Nouveau style architecture steeped in history. There is plenty to do here, and although the town’s architecture is a museum in itself, the art nouveau centre; Jugendstilsenteret is worth a visit to explore the story in more depth.
Setting off on our first ride, we'll be heading towards Stranda where we can take in some more of those breathtaking Norwegian views. From here we'll ferry across to Valldal, our home for the next two nights.
Now suitably warmed up, heading up to the viewpoint to admire the Trollstigen Pass (The Troll's Ladder) is our next challenge. Whilst the iconic hairpin bends is the view we’re searching for, we won’t need to take on the entire Tollstigen Road to reach the top and instead we’ll take a more manageable route to the viewpoint from Valldal. Whilst today’s route will be one of our toughest climbs of the week, it is an achievable challenge on our e-bikes and rewarded with incredible views of Norway’s most picturesque road.
After a relaxing kayaking experience to take in the spectacular scenery from the water, we'll head off from Valldal, and the latter part of the route will take us to Geiranger (home to UNESCO World Heritage fjord landscapes) and to the lovely village of Sæbø. To round out the trip, we'll arrive back at Ålesund, once again taking in the incredible scenery and exploring this wonderful town.

  • Meals: Dinner

After arriving into Ålesund airport, we’ll transfer as a group to our first hotel.

On the first evening you’ll meet your guides for a presentation of the week and be fitted to your rental bikes (if renting), so you‘re fully prepared for your first ride out into this enchanting part of Norway in the morning.

Day 2
Sykkylven to Stranda
28 Miles / 45 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 800 Metres Approx.

After a delicious breakfast in Ålesund, we’ll start our journey with a quick 30 minute transfer to Magerholm, from where we’ll jump on the ferry over the fjord to Sykkylven where we will start our ride.

Our first stage will take us through old farms, mountain lakes and passes with spectacular sights towards the Alps of Sunnmøre. Down to the fjord and the village of Stranda, we’ll jump on a boat for a transfer to the wonderful village of Valldal, where we’ll be staying for the next 2 nights.

Our hotel is beautifully located right by the fjord, with stunning views of Norddalsfjorden and the Sunnmørsfjella mountains.

Day 3
Trollstigen Loop
43 Miles / 70 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 1100 Metres Approx.

Today’s highlight is a view over Norway’s most spectacular mountain road, the Trollstigen Pass. We’ll be climbing from Valldal up to the viewpoint and back again, There’s minimal traffic and we’ll take some time to admire the phenomenal view from the top. We’ll then enjoy the descent on the way back down to our lovely hotel in Valldal. Of course, we’ll also be battery powered which will give us much-needed boost up the climb.

On the way to the view point we’ll experience a plethora of highlights and as we ride through lush valleys, past charming strawberry fields, alongside steep mountains with breath-taking viewpoints dotted along the way that will leave us in awe. After completing the climb, we can look forward to a long downhill leg, back to village of Valldal.

Day 4
Morning Kayaking - Afternoon Ride Eidsdal to Geiranger
19 Miles / 30 Kms Approx. (Optional 10 Mile / 15 Km Loop)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 700 Metres Approx. (Optional / Additional 400 Metres)

We’ll start today with a relaxing kayaking experience. With Valldal as our starting point, we’ll experience peace and quiet on Norddalsfjorden and in the UNESCO World Heritage fjord Tafjorden. Both are shielded from cruise traffic and large boats, so an ideal spot for kayaking. We’ll take in the unique nature, with waterfalls thundering into the fjord, idyllic mountain pastures, and last, but not least a relatively undiscovered fjord (our little secret). We’ll be using tandem kayaks, and you don’t need any prior experience to join in.

Back on dry land, in the afternoon we’ll leave behind the enchanting Valldal and take a ferry across to Eidsdal. From here we’ll be riding on a mountain road all the way to Geiranger. On our way down the hairpin bends of the mountain, we’ll be sure to stop at the Ørnesvingen viewpoint to get that perfect photo of the UNESCO World Heritage fjord landscape.

Tonight, we will be staying just outside the town of Geiranger at a quiet and tranquil hotel (located very close to the World Heritage Geiranger fjord). You can use one of the private shuttles from the hotel to get to and from town if you’d like to explore.

If you‘re still raring to go after arriving in Geiranger, we have an additional loop for those looking for a bit more riding today, an additional 10 Miles / 15 Kms (400 metres) up to an incredible viewpoint over the fjords. And of course, what goes up, gets the fun of coming down, enjoy the descent!

Day 5
Hellesylt to Urke
22 Miles / 35 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 400 Metres Approx.

After breakfast, we’ll begin the day by sailing through the gorgeous Geirangerfjord on the ferry. Relax and reflect as we witness some of the most breath-taking natural and cultural landscapes that Norway has to offer. We’ll see old farm hamlets – clinging onto little patches of green, high up in the mountains around us, and waterfalls that cascade down into the deep fjord.

Once the ferry reaches Hellesylt, we will disembark and jump on our bikes to continue our ride through Norangsdalen, known locally as “The Queen’s Route.”

We will end today’s adventure in Sæbø, where we will stay for the night, looking out at spectacular views and enjoying a delicious meal.

Day 6
Sæbø to Festøya
34 Miles / 55 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Ascent: 800 Metres Approx.

After another amazing breakfast, we will set off on our last ride of the journey back to Ålesund.

We’ll be cycling through Hjørundfjord, a site which has never truly been tamed by man, where several of the small communities that rest by the banks of the fjord are still only reachable by ferry. The jagged peaks of the Sunmøre Alps and the narrow valleys make this a retreat for adventure seekers and leisure travellers alike.

Once we reach the end of the Hjørundfjord, we will take the ferry from Festøya; before getting picked up for a 20 minute vehicle transfer to the centre of Ålesund. This is where we will meet for our last evening meal together and our final night of the tour.

Day 7
Depart Ålesund
  • Meals: Breakfast

After having a restful night and breakfast, we will leave behind Ålesund and go our separate ways to return home.

The Cycling

Terrain

You’ll predominantly be riding on scenic, quiet roads (most shared with traffic), with some short sections on dedicated cycle paths (around 5% of the route).

You’ll be riding almost exclusively on tarmac, with occasional (short) sections on gravel / dirt roads.

Day 3 will pose the biggest challenge, as you make your way 30 Kms up hill to admire the famous Trollstigen roads, but your e-bikes should help take the sting out of this.

For this tour we provide e-bikes only. For more information about riding an electric bike on our holidays please click here

Leisure Cycling Grade

5
Grade 3 : Moderate

Distances generally between 20-45 miles / 32-72 kms per day

For the leisure cyclist with a good level of physical fitness

May include some steeper, cheeky climbs and possibly sections of varying terrain (eg. forest tracks, gravel paths etc)

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

Although you may not cycle everyday, you do keep yourself relatively fit and maybe enjoy an afternoon out on your bike at the weekend. Your preference is perhaps for flatter terrain but you don’t mind tackling some hills, and the occasional steep climb if you can take it at your own pace. For those happy to tackle some ups and downs, and possibly some sections of varying terrain (eg. forest tracks, gravel paths etc) we’d recommend our grade 3 trips. We’d generally expect those on a Grade 3 holiday to have a decent level of physical fitness and be comfortable with some longer days in the saddle.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.

We will provide you with details of suitable flight/arrival/departure schedules as flight timetables become available.

There are currently no direct flights from the UK into Alesund, but there are usually non-direct flights via Amsterdam or Bergen available.

Please check with us before making any travel arrangements to make sure we have reached the minimum number required to guarantee the trip and to ensure your arrangements fit with our scheduled transfers.

Please note If you make travel arrangements that fall outside of the scheduled transfer windows, there may be an additional charge for individual transfers. Alternatively, you can jump on the local airport bus for (approx) 200kr/pers or get a taxi to Ålesund for (approx) 650kr.

You’ll be staying in a mixture of 3 and 4* hotels, where possible with beautiful views of the Fjords, many with on-site restaurants serving up delicious local fayre.

Bike Hire

If you don’t own a suitable bike or would prefer to avoid bringing your own we have bikes available to rent. These bikes are typically Cannondale Tesoro Neo X E-Bikes.

The bikes don’t as standard come with a pannier rack or pannier bags, as the support vehicle will be close by to carry your daily necessities, but do let us know if you’d like a handlebar bag to be provided.

This is an e-bikes only tour and so we aren’t able to provide regular hybrid bikes.

If you choose to bring your own e-bike, please contact us so we can discuss the bike specification and ensure it is suitable for the tour. It’s worth noting many airlines don’t allow e-bikes on board so please chat to us for alternative travel options if you‘re hoping to bring your own e-bike along.

We can provide helmets locally on request. Please let us know at the time of booking if you’d like us to organise this for you.
