This self-guided cycling holiday along the Danube will take you from the beautiful baroque town of Schärding, all the way to the Danube metropolis of Vienna. Never too far from the cool water of the Danube, you'll enjoy one of Europe’s loveliest and most popular cycle routes. An ideal way to see this picturesque region and it’s downstream all the way!

You'll have plenty of time to take in the breath-taking natural beauty of the Danube valley and the Schlögen bend, and landscapes like the Machland, the Strudengau and the famous Wachau will accompany you along the way.

Out in the countryside, you can enjoy some traditional Austrian delicacies: from savoury dumplings to the delicious wines of the Buschenschenken taverns in the Wachau region. This cycle tour is a true classic and is ideally suited as a first cycling holiday or for those looking to just take it slow and take in your surroundings.

As the route is almost completely flat, it's also a great choice if you're looking for a family friendly route, each day has the option to shorten the riding distance by using public boats or trains, so great flexibility for those with little ones.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Schärding

Today you arrive in the picture-postcard, baroque town of Schärding. Depending on flight times, you may have the chance to stretch your legs with a sightseeing wander around the city and admire the famous Silberzeile.

Day 2
Schärding to Schlögen
34 Miles / 55 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 260 Metres Approx.

You local representative will meet you at your hotel in the morning to fit you to your rental bikes (if renting) and to provide you with daily route information, including maps and notes. They will discuss your route and answer any questions you might have.

You’ll ride this morning just a short distance along the river Inn and soon reach Passau, well known as the city of three rivers. Take some time for a stroll through the city center or visit the cathedral which houses the world´s biggest church organ.

From Passau you’ll continue along the river Danube. Via Obernzell you’ll cycle through the ´Sauwald region´ to Engelhartszell, where the only Trappist monastery of Austria invites you in for a liqueur tasting. The route will then guide you through the nature Donauleiten nature reserve, from where you’ll reach the Schlögen Bend. This is where granite proved to be too much of an opponent and forced the Danube to change directions by 180 degrees. This natural spectacle is one not to be missed!

Day 3
Schlögen to Linz
34 Miles / 55 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 270 Metres Approx.

Today you’ll be riding through the green Eferdinger Basin via the market towns of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering to the Upper Austrian capital, and the European Capital of Culture in 2009; The historic old town has many pubs and eateries for you to discover.

Austria’s third-largest city, you can take a walk through the Donaulände Park, or people watch in the historic market square, surrounded by Baroque buildings. From Linz it’s also possible to board Europe’s steepest mountain railway to climb the Pöstlingberg, a hill overlooking the city. The train, which still operates with its original 19th-Century cars, covers nearly 2 miles and about 825 vertical feet / 251 metres in 16 minutes and offers a fantastic view out over the river.

If travelling with little ones, check out the Grottenbahn Pöstlingberg (mini railway).

Day 4
Linz to Grein (or surrounding area)
40 Miles / 65 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 110 Metres Approx.

Today the route will lead you away from the course of the Danube via St. Florian (Augustinian monastery) to Enns. Here you can view the town square with its 60-meter-high tower, the landmark of the oldest town in Austria, or you can visit the archaeological collection in the municipal museum Lauriacum.

Back on the Danube and you’ll meander your way to the beautiful little baroque town of Grein. Here you’ll have the opportunity to visit the oldest municipal theater in Austria that is still being used. Additionally, you can visit the maritime museum or Greinburg castle.

Day 5
Grein (or surrounding area) to Wachau
40 Miles / 65 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 380 Metres Approx.

This section of the Danube, the Strudengau, was once feared by sailors, but where they used to fight against the Danube currents you can now enjoy a leisurely bike ride. In Maria Taferl, high above the Danube, you will find the magnificent pilgrimage church, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. You should make a little stop in Melk and look up or you will miss the beautiful Melk monastery that overlooks the Danube.

Melk marks the official start of the Wachau, Austria’s most famous wine-growing region. Vineyards stretch up the sides of the valley and wine villages lie along the river as well as in the neighbouring hills. A wine tasting is almost a must in this area – and so we’ve included one for you!

Day 6
Wachau to Tulln
40 Miles / 65 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 70 Metres Approx.

Today you’ll ride through the little wine village of Durnstein, with its castle ruins, and through the 1000 year old town of Krems. The setting for today’s ride often feels more like remote wetlands (with ample wildlife) than one of the world’s mightiest rivers.

When you reach Tulln, known as the “Flower City,” you can enjoy a ride along the medieval town walls and look for relics from Roman times.

Day 7
Tulln to Vienna
25 Miles / 40 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 30 Metres Approx.

Today is your final day’s cycling but there’s still time for some highlights, like Klosterneuburg with its imposing monastery, before reaching Vienna for your final night.

If you still have the energy Vienna is a fantastic city which is well worth exploring. Treat yourself to a Viennese-style Americano coffee and a piece of the famous Sachertorte cake in one of Vienna’s typical coffee houses. Take a stroll along Vienna’s Parade shopping street, along Mariahilfer Strasse, visit St Stephen’s Cathedral or see the main sights and take a trip in one of the famous Fiaker cabs.

Day 8
Departure from or Extension in Vienna
  • Meals: Breakfast

The time has come to head home but not before some last minute sightseeing, a ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel, and a chance to get those souvenirs you promised everyone back home.

If you’d like to be transferred back to Schärding at the end of the holiday, our local team offer a van transfer service that leaves Vienna at 14.00 daily. The price for this is 75€ per person and an additional 25€ if you‘re travelling with your own bike. Both can be paid for locally. Train connections are also available.

The Cycling

Terrain

Although the distances are fairly long on some days, the terrain is mostly flat with a downhill bias, along an easy to follow and well-signed established cycle route on quiet roads and cycle paths.

For this tour we recommend a hybrid bike, however road bikes can be used if preferred, (with slick or semi slick tyres) please contact our office for more details.

If you‘re travelling with your family, we’d really recommend that all members of the group are comfortable riding the daily distances, or the adults are confident riding with a trailer / tag-along for the stated distances. There is however the option of catching a ferry up and down the river with your bikes, if you ever do need a little boost.

It is possible to use an E-Bike for this holiday. For more information about riding an electric bike on our holidays please click here

Grade 1 - 2 : Easy/Gentle

Aspects of both our grade 1 and 2 trips

Suitable for those looking for a relaxed ride

Occasional ups and downs

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

Trips that are graded as a 1-2, will have aspects of both our grade 1 and grade 2 trips. These tours are still suitable for those looking for an accessible cycling holiday with manageable daily distances, along predominately flat terrain, however there will be some days / sections where we’d expect you to be up for a slightly cheeky challenge. It might be that the distances are a little longer on some days or that the terrain is slightly more undulating, but the rides are still relaxed and manageable for families who are generally fit and healthy.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.

The Essentials

Travel Options

For this tour we ask that you make your own way to your hotel in Scharding on arrival and onwards from Vienna at the end of the trip.

Suggested airports are Munich (MUC) or Vienna (VIE).

Most flights from North America to either airport will require overnight travel, and/or a stop over in an intermediary airport. Some direct flights may be available with Delta, KLM or Lufthansa depending on where you are flying from. Please note that flying from North America may involve multiple travel days.

Scharding has good rail and road connections should you choose to arrive by train or car.

If you’d like to be transferred back to Scharding at the end of the holiday, our local team offer a van transfer service that leaves Vienna at 14.00 daily. The price for this is $110 per person and an additional $50 per person if you‘re travelling with your own bike. Please let us know in advance and we can organise this for you – to be paid for locally. Train connections are also available.

Please check with Skedaddle before booking any flights, or making any travel arrangements, so that we can ensure they fit in with the holiday schedule.

Accommodation

Accommodation for this trip will be in shared twin or double en suite rooms in good quality 3 and 4 star hotels.

Subject to availability, there are triple and adjoining rooms available for you and your family. Please contact us with your preferred rooming arrangements and we can check availability for you.

Please note that a twin bedded room may be a typical Austrian Twin, which comprises two mattresses and two sets of bedding in the same large bed frame; it may not be possible to separate the mattresses.

Bike Hire

If you don’t own a suitable bike or would prefer to avoid bringing your own we have a choice of bikes available to rent. Our standard bikes are hybrids (red in the photo above) with semi slick tyres and a relaxed riding position. These bikes typically have a unisex / step-through frame, although bikes with a high cross bar are often available on request (height dependent). You also have the choice of premium hybrid bikes (black in the photo above) which are lighter than our standard bikes and offer a more dynamic riding position.

We also have e-bikes available. (We only have a small number however and so these are always on request). Please note, e-bikes will often have pedal brakes as well as hand brakes.

Bikes come equipped with a back pannier and handlebar bag, a tool kit, a puncture repair kit, a cycle computer, a pump and a combination lock. We recommend bringing along your own helmets, but please let us know if you’d prefer to rent one.

It is possible to bring along your own saddle and / or pedals, but we ask that you bring along your own tools as you will need to fit them yourselves. If you bring your own saddle, we also recommend you bring an adapter, due to differing saddle diameters.

(Please note: water bottles and water bottle cages are not provided.)

For your family we have a selection of child trailers (up to 5 years approx), baby and child seats (up to 3 years), follow-me attachments (4 – 9 years) and children’s bikes (8 – 11 years approx).
