Let us take you beyond Spain’s busy costas! Our experts have picked out their favourite destinations for cycling in Spain.

Camino and Northern Spain: Cycling in Northern Spain offers scenery and history-a-plenty, as well as detours to vineyards in the wine region of La Rioja and cultural sights in the Basque Country. There are options for gravel, mountain bike and road cyclists alike, as well as relaxing coastal routes. The varied and lush landscapes dotted with picturesque villages and towns, rolling hills and high mountain passes are beckoning to be explored by bike.

Andalucia: Take on the giant clefts and ravines of the Spanish Badlands with a gravel riding holiday in Andalucia or take on an easier route from the white villages to the ocean. Maybe you’re looking for a mountain adventure in Sierra Nevada or a spot of culture inland. The sheer diversity of the Andalusian landscape and its temperate mediterranean climate mean any cyclist will find a route that suits their holidaying style.

Enjoy riding alongside rugged coastlines and scenic stretches of Spanish countryside, spotting ancient villages and stopping off at world-class museums along the way. Catalonia is also a gastronomical delight, with amazing seafood, tapas and wine available across the region.

Dan Hirst, Skedaddle España Tour Guide on his bike

“Spain’s incredible mix of landscapes means there’s always a fresh adventure around the corner. As a mountain biker at heart, I find the rugged charm of the Picos de Europa and the Camino Primitivo especially rewarding. Head south and you’ll discover stunning coastal scenery near our base in Tarifa – it’s a place that never fails to impress. Come and experience it – you won’t be disappointed!”

          Cycling in Spain

Smooth roads for cycling in Spain

          Terrain

The cycling terrain in Spain is diverse, offering something for all types of cyclists. From mountains with challenging climbs to the gentle terrain of coastal regions, as well as plenty of options for gravel and mountain bike riding too, Spain’s range of landscapes make it a great destination for any cyclist. For anyone looking for relaxed options, the network of Vias-Verdes (greenways) offer a laid-back cycling holiday option.

          Climate

Depending on the region you choose, year-round cycling is possible, with different areas offering ideal conditions at different times of the year. Southern Spain experiences mild winters so is a good option for anyone wanting to cycle late in the year, whereas Northern Spain offers perfect cycling weather between May and October. We typically avoid some cycling holidays in the height of summer for Southern regions when temperatures can become too hot.

          Infrastructure

Roads are well-marked and bike lanes are common, while a growing number of accommodations and services are available to cyclists.

          Routes

          Our top Spanish cycling routes:

Camino de Santiago - The Camino de Santiago is said to be the first great European tourist route. Travelled by pilgrims from around the world for over 1000 years, this is a beautiful journey through historic landscapes.

Bilbao to Barcelona - This incredible coast to coast journey from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean meanders through spectacular sierras and valleys in the shadow of the majestic Pyrenean mountain range.

Pyrenees All Mountain Traverse – Mountain biking in the Spanish Pyrenees you’ll be treated to an epic wilderness ride with endless sublime singletrack snaking through some of Europe’s most breathtaking scenery.

Costa de la Luz - Enjoy a relaxing journey between stunning beaches and coves, linked by stretches of EuroVelo traffic-free cycleways and quiet local roads with bustling fishing ports and ancient whitewashed towns for an authentic Andaluz experience.

          Food and Drink

Spanish Food and DrinkSpain’s food scene is a highlight of any cycling holiday, offering a mouthwatering mix of fresh, local flavours. Imagine stopping in charming villages to enjoy delicious pintxos (tapas), vibrant salads, or rich paella made with seasonal ingredients. From coastal seafood feasts like the mojama tuna of Tarifa to hearty mountain dishes like Galician Caldo Gallego (potato and vegetable broth), the cuisine in Spain varies greatly from region to region. Spain is famed for its wine, from crisp white Albarino in the northern coastal regions to deep Ronda reds. Of course, no mention of Spanish wine would be complete without Rioja – a rich, world-renowned red produced in the sun-drenched vineyards of northern Spain. In Asturias you may be invited to try freshly poured sidra (cider) instead of wine. Meanwhile, Andalucía is home to the sherry triangle.

Whether you’re refuelling with light bites during the day or savouring traditional dinners in bustling plazas, the culinary experience in Spain adds a delicious layer to exploring its diverse landscapes by bike.

          FAQS

What types of cycling holidays do you offer in Spain?

Skedaddle offers a variety of cycling holidays across Spain, catering to different preferences and skill levels:

          - Leisure Cycling: Gentle to moderate-paced tours exploring regions like Andalucía and Catalonia.

          - Mountain Biking: Challenging off-road adventures through areas such as the Camino Primitivo.

          - Road Cycling: Challenging routes including the Basque Country to Andalucía journey as well as less demanding such as Los Pueblos Blancos.

          - Gravel Riding: Versatile tours suitable for mixed terrain such as the Badlands of Andalucia.

Do you offer e-bikes on your Spain cycling holidays?

Yes, e-bikes are available on most of our Spanish cycling holidays. For example, the Andalucía - White Villages to the Ocean tour offers both regular bikes and pedal-assist e-bikes. E-bike hire is optional and can be selected during the booking process. E-bike-only departures are also available for certain tours, such as the Granada to Seville trip.

Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, you can bring your own bike on all tours. Skedaddle can advise on transport options and storage for bike boxes. It's recommended to check specific tour details for any additional requirements or restrictions.

What is the minimum number of riders required for a self-guided trip?

Self-guided tours typically require a minimum of two participants for safety and logistical reasons. Solo travellers are welcome and can join existing group holidays. It's advisable to check the specific requirements for each tour during the booking process.

Can I start my trip on any day of the week?

Many of Skedaddle's Spanish tours offer flexible start dates, allowing you to begin your trip on any day of the week. However, our group tours have fixed departure dates. It's recommended to check the specific tour details for start date options.

What is the best time of year to cycle in Spain?

          The best times to cycle in Spain are during the spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) months. These periods offer mild temperatures and are ideal for cycling. Summer months can be quite hot, especially in southern regions like Andalucia. It's advisable to check the specific tour details for seasonal recommendations.;

          Is Spain safe for cycling?

Yes, Spain is very safe for cycling. Skedaddle's routes are carefully selected to minimise traffic and maximise scenic, traffic-free paths. Local drivers are accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists, and many regions are known for their cycling-friendly infrastructure. It's always recommended to follow local traffic laws and wear appropriate safety gear.

Are the brake levers on the hire bikes set up differently than in the UK?

Yes, in Spain, hire bikes typically have the opposite brake setup compared to the UK. In Spain, the right-hand lever controls the front brake, and the left-hand lever controls the rear brake. As part of the handover process, we'll walk you through all aspects of the bike and answer any questions you have, helping you get fully comfortable with the setup. We'll also make sure everything is adjusted correctly for you and fit your own pedals if you'd like.

Are Skedaddle's cycling holidays in Spain suitable for beginners?

Skedaddle offers tours catering to various skill levels:

          - Guided Tours: Include a support vehicle, luggage transfers, and an experienced cycling guide.
