Stretching for around 430 km between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, the Pyrenees are one of Europe’s most rewarding cycling destinations. Dividing France and Spain, this spectacular mountain range offers everything from legendary road climbs and quiet valley routes to rugged off-road trails.

For road cyclists, the Pyrenees are a true bucket-list destination, with challenging ascents, dramatic scenery and famous Tour de France climbs including the Col du Tourmalet and Col d’Aspin. The mountains are also a regular feature of La Vuelta a España, adding further prestige to many of the region's most iconic roads and climbs. Our road cycling holidays in the Pyrenees are designed for riders looking to experience these iconic mountains while enjoying expert support and carefully planned routes.

The Pyrenees are equally suited to other styles of riding, with mountain bike holidays such as the All Mountain Traverse, that explore remote trails, forests and varied terrain away from the main roads. Whether you choose to ride on the French side or discover the Spanish Pyrenees, each region offers a unique character, from traditional mountain villages to spectacular high-altitude landscapes.

Explore our wider range of France cycling holidays and Spain cycling holidays to discover more ways to experience this incredible mountain range.

Best Bases and Climbs for Cycling in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees offer a variety of excellent bases for exploring some of Europe’s most iconic cycling roads. In the French Pyrenees, areas around Lourdes, the Vallée des Gaves and the Hautes-Pyrénées provide access to legendary Tour de France climbs, including the Col du Tourmalet (2,115m), Col d’Aspin (1,489m) and Col de Peyresourde (1,569m). These routes combine challenging gradients with spectacular mountain scenery and are highlights of our Pyrenees road cycling tours.

On the Spanish side, the Pyrenees offer a different character, with quieter roads, dramatic valleys and challenging climbs. Riders can discover remote mountain landscapes either by road or off road, while experiencing the unique culture and cuisine of northern Spain.

Whether you are looking to test yourself on famous Tour de France climbs or explore lesser-known mountain roads, the Pyrenees provide unforgettable cycling experiences for every type of rider.

            Pyrenees Terrain and Riding Conditions

            Terrain in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees offer a diverse riding experience shaped by the geography of the mountain range. On the French side, climbs are often longer and more consistent, with well-known Tour de France routes following winding roads that rise steadily through valleys before reaching high mountain passes. Expect sustained gradients, sweeping hairpins and technical descents that reward controlled pacing.

The Spanish side has a drier, more rugged feel, with sharper changes in elevation, steeper ramps in places and quieter roads that wind through dramatic landscapes. For mountain bikers, the terrain becomes even more varied, with rocky singletrack, forest trails and rough mountain tracks creating a more technical off-road challenge.

A lightweight road bike with suitable gearing is ideal for tackling the famous Pyrenean climbs, while mountain bike tours require a capable full suspension mountain bike designed for uneven surfaces, steep sections and changing trail conditions. E-mountain bikes can also be a great option for riders wanting extra support on longer climbs or more technical terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cycling in the Pyrenees

How long does it take to cycle across the Pyrenees?

The time needed to cycle the Pyrenees depends on your route, fitness level and the type of cycling experience you are looking for. Crossing the entire mountain range from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean can take around a week or more, with riders covering hundreds of kilometres and tackling significant elevation gain. Many cyclists choose to focus on specific sections instead, allowing time to enjoy famous climbs, mountain scenery and local villages. Our Pyrenees cycling tours are designed around carefully planned routes over 10 or 12 days, taking into account the challenge of the terrain while allowing riders to experience the highlights of this iconic range.

Where is the best base for cycling in the Pyrenees?

The best base depends on the type of cycling you want to experience. The French Pyrenees, particularly around the Hautes-Pyrénées, are ideal for riders looking to tackle legendary Tour de France climbs such as the Col du Tourmalet, Col d’Aspin and Col de Peyresourde. The Spanish Pyrenees offer a quieter, more rugged experience, with dramatic landscapes and challenging roads away from the busiest cycling routes.

For mountain bikers, Aínsa is one of the region’s standout destinations, renowned for its extensive Zona Zero trail network, which features hundreds of kilometres of waymarked trails ranging from flowing singletrack to demanding enduro-style descents.

How difficult is cycling in the Pyrenees?

Cycling in the Pyrenees is challenging, with long climbs, significant elevation gain and mountain conditions that test endurance. However, the difficulty varies depending on the route and cycling style. Road cyclists can choose between iconic climbs and more achievable mountain routes, while mountain bikers can explore a huge variety of technical natural trails, perfect for enduro and singletrack lovers. With the right preparation and a suitable tour grade, the Pyrenees are an achievable and rewarding destination.

What type of bike do I need for a Pyrenees cycling tour?

The ideal bike depends on your chosen adventure. Road cycling tours are best suited to lightweight road bikes with suitable gearing for sustained climbs, while mountain bike tours require a capable full suspension mountain bike designed for loose rocks, singletrack and steep terrain. e-Mountain bikes can also be an excellent choice for riders wanting additional support on longer climbs or varied terrain.

Are the Pyrenees good for a first mountain cycling holiday?

Our Pyrenees trips are graded 4 and are designed for cyclists with previous experience of mountain riding. The routes include long climbs and significant elevation gain, making them more challenging than many other cycling destinations. If you're already comfortable riding in hilly or mountainous terrain, the Pyrenees offer an unforgettable experience. If you're new to mountain cycling, we'd be happy to recommend a more suitable destination to start with.
