What are the best cycling routes in France?

          Cycling routes in France

France offers an incredible variety of cycling routes, from cruising gently through the Loire Valley, tasting your way through the rural villages of the Dordogne or high mountain passes in the Alps and Pyrenees.

Popular trips include our St Malo to Nice journey across France from Channel to the Med, the Route des Grandes Alpes, and leisurely cycling holidays through some of the country's most picturesque wine-growing regions such as Provence.

Our Loire cycling trips also include sections of the famous long distance Loire à Vélo cycle path.

          Quote

Cycling is so deeply engrained into the culture of the country that even non-cyclists seem to have a genuine appreciation for it and it’s really not unusual to be cheered on by drivers, pedestrians, or bystanders - it’s amazing how encouraging a friendly “Allez! Allez!” can be when you’re grinding your way over an alpine pass in the summer heat. And for fans of the sport, there something really special about riding the same roads as our heroes, rolling over tarmac daubed with their names and conquering those same mountains.  David Hall – Skedaddle Guide

What is the terrain like in France?

One of the reasons cycling holidays in France are so popular is the sheer diversity of terrain. Riders can choose from flat canal paths and riverside cycle routes, rolling countryside, coastal roads, forest trails and some of Europe's most famous mountain climbs and descents.

What is the French climate like?

France's varied geography creates excellent cycling conditions throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn are ideal for most regions, while mountain routes are best enjoyed during the summer months when the high passes are open and temperatures are generally warmer.

          What is French food like?

Few destinations combine cycling and cuisine quite like France. From fresh pastries and local market produce to regional specialities and world-famous wines, every ride offers the chance to experience the country's rich culinary heritage.

Whether you're enjoying lunch in a village square or dining at a family-run hotel, great food is always part of the journey.  Riding through vineyards by day and sipping France’s legendary wines at night gives you a unique connection and understanding of the landscape and terroir.

          France FAQs

Do I need to be an experienced cyclist to enjoy a cycling holiday in France?

Not at all. Our cycling holidays in France are designed for a wide range of abilities, from leisurely riders cycling the Loire Valley to experienced cyclists tackling mountain routes in the Alps and Pyrenees. Each holiday is graded to help you find the right trip for your fitness and experience level and we can help you pick the right tour for you.

How fit do I need to be for a cycling holiday in France?

The fitness required depends on the holiday you choose. Some tours focus on relaxed daily rides and sightseeing, while others involve longer distances and more climbing. Detailed trip notes provide information on daily distances, terrain and support, helping you choose a holiday that matches your goals.

What are the rules for cycling in France?

Cyclists in France must follow the same road rules as other vehicles. France has a strong cycling culture, and drivers are generally accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists, although in many places there are separate cycling paths and bike lanes. Front and rear lights are required when visibility is poor, and reflective clothing recommended in certain situations. Cycling helmets are required on all our trips.

What type of bike do I need?

The ideal bike depends on the holiday. Road bikes are best suited to road cycling tours, while hybrid, or electric bikes are often ideal for leisure cycling holidays. Many of our trips offer bike hire, making it easy to enjoy a cycling holiday in France without travelling with your own bike.

When is the best time to go cycling in France?

France offers excellent cycling conditions from spring through to autumn. April, May, June and September are particularly popular thanks to milder temperatures and quieter roads, while the Alps and Pyrenees are best visited during the summer when the high mountain passes are open and clear of snow.
During the Tour de France, some mountain passes and regions can become very busy with increased traffic and road closures. We do however keep an eye on the race route each year and try to plan our itineraries with this in mind to avoid these closures where possible.

Which region of France is best for cycling?

That depends on the type of cycling experience you're looking for. Cycling in the Loire Valley is perfect for those seeking rides through vineyards and historic towns, Dordogne combines beautiful countryside with exceptional food, Provence offers sunshine and iconic landscapes, In contrast, the Alps and Pyrenees are renowned for challenging climbs and spectacular scenery, perfect for riders looking to push their limits The mountainous island of Corsica is another good option for road cyclists looking for elevation and quieter roads.

Are cycling holidays in France guided?

We offer both guided and self-guided cycling holidays in France. Guided trips include the support of experienced leaders and local knowledge, while self-guided holidays provide route notes, navigation tools and logistical support, allowing you to explore at your own pace.

Can I join a cycling holiday on my own?

Absolutely. Many guests travel solo and enjoy the social atmosphere of our guided tours. You will be riding with like-minded people during the day and enjoying a relaxed, friendly atmosphere every evening. By dinner on day two you will have forgotten you are travelling solo and be part of a group of new cycling friends. Please note that a single room supplement applies to solo travellers who require their own room. For a self-guided trip a minimum of two riders are required.

What is included in the trip notes?

Our trip notes contain detailed information on daily distances, climbing, bike hire options, logistics and what to expect from the riding. If you're considering one of our cycling tours in France, requesting the trip notes is a great way to determine whether it's the right holiday for you, and if you still have questions, just give us a call!

I'm not sure which cycling holiday in France is right for me. What should I do?

Our cycling specialists are always happy to help. Whether you're considering leisurely bike tours in France, family-friendly adventures or more challenging cycling holidays, we can recommend the most suitable trip based on your experience, fitness and interests. Give us a call and we can chat through the possibilities.
