New for 2025, this coast to coast journey across southern Italy will take us from the marvellous old town of Monopoli in the region of Puglia on the Adriatic Coast to the ancient Greek temples of Paestum on the Tyrrhenian Sea, south of Naples. The route will unveil undiscovered cycling havens, steering clear of well-trodden tourist routes and offering authentic experiences that highlight this region's true charm.

Starting from the Adriatic’s coastal plains, we’ll climb to the scenic Valle d’Itria and traverse the expansive Murgia plateau, passing through the iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites of Alberobello and Matera. From the Murgia plateau, the landscape slowly transforms into the rolling hills and towering mountains of Basilicata, a region where nature still reigns over civilisation.

As we cross the highlands of Basilicata, we face a long ascent from Tricarico to the Tre Cancelli and Cupolicchio passes, testing our endurance over rolling hills before tackling steep sections toward Castelmezzano, where breathtaking views of the "Dolomiti Lucane" , the dolomites of the south await us. The route leads us into the mountains, reaching its highest point at 1,300 meters beneath the majestic Monte Volturino, followed by a thrilling descent into Valle d’Agri featuring 13 switchbacks.

After crossing the highlands of Basilicata, we descend into the breathtaking Cilento National Park in Campania, home to dramatic cliffs and serene coastal plains. Continuing along the Cilento Coast, prepare for sharp climbs and descents while enjoying panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean and charming coastal villages.

Our journey will end at the magnificent Greek temples of Paestum, yet another UNESCO World Heritage site. Along the way, we'll explore deep gorges, pedal through enchanting woods, and visit several famous medieval towns, with the added delight of discovering countless picturesque hilltop villages.

To complete the experience, we’ll indulge in the finest regional cuisine and savour the exceptional wines of southern Italy. Buon appetito!

After breakfast, we’ll head out through the olive groves on the coastal plain, soon encountering our first climb of the holiday, which will lead us up into the Valle d’Itria. From there, the rest of the day will feature a series of rolling hills, providing a pleasant ride through the scenic countryside.

A meandering network of country lanes, lined with dry stone walls, takes us to the famous town of Alberobello, and its iconic trulli houses. A perfect place for a coffee stop, we can take our time to have a closer look at this UNESCO World Heritage site. After our visit we continue on small country roads through the Valle d’Itria until we reach the town of Noci where it’s time for some lunch.

In the afternoon, we arrive at the Murgia plateau cycling to Gioia del Colle, where we visit its Norman castle. From there, a newly surfaced cycleway takes us to the wonderful town of Matera in Basilicata, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we will stay for the night.

After settling in, we can take a stroll through the Sassi area of the town, characterized by its many cave dwellings, many of which are still lived in, as well as its rock-cut and beautifully decorated churches. We will have dinner in one of the many local restaurants, several of which offer inside-cave seating, an experience not to be missed!

Day 3
Matera to Tricarico
37 Miles / 60 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 1,110 Metres Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch

Leaving Matera we head further inland, crossing the Murgia plateau, heading west, on a secondary road running parallel to the San Giuliana Lake. The gently rolling terrain of the plateau will soon give way to the first longer climb of the day, which takes us through an open landscape of fields and pastures to the town of Grassano, where we stop in the main square for coffee.

After coffee we head down again into a side valley of the Bassento River before climbing up again to the hill top settlement of Tricarico. This town of Arab-Norman origin, boasts one of the best-preserved medieval centres of the whole of Basilicata, and is embellished by the Cathedral, the Norman tower and castle, the Duke’s Palace, the so-called Saracen Tower and several town gates.

On reaching the town we cycle to the panoramic view point near the Saracen Tower where we will have our picnic lunch, after which we reach our hotel in an ancient palace near the cathedral in the old town.

In the afternoon we have time to explore the narrow alleys of the old town, and have an aperitivo in a local bar, before sitting down for a well-deserved dinner, preparing ourselves for a more testing day tomorrow.

Tricarico to Calvello
53 Miles / 86 Kms Approx.
Ascent: 1,830 Metres Approx.

The queen stage of our journey starts with the long and steady climb from Tricarico to the Tre Cancelli and Cupolicchio passes. Here we cycle through the pastures and forests of the Basilicata heartland where human presence is little and far between.

After reaching Monte Cupolicchio, we descend into the village of Albano di Lucania, where we stop for coffee before swooping down to the Basento River. The next seven km to Castelmezzano will test our legs with some steep sections, but the effort is well worth it for the panoramic descent into this little mountain town nestled beneath several towering rock faces of the “Dolomiti Lucane“, dolomites of the south. We will stop here for a short walk through the village and to grab something delicious to eat.

After lunch, we continue climbing gradually on a little mountain road with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. A swift descent on nearly perfect tarmac brings us to Laurenzana and into the Camastra River Valley, which we follow to the village of Calvello, where we will rest for the night with the hardest day now behind us.

Calvello to Padula
37 Miles / 59 Kms Approx.

This morning, from Calvello, we head uphill into the mountains to reach the highest point of our journey, at around 1300 metres above sea level. Here we pass underneath Monte Volturino, which dominates the valleys of the Camastra and Agri Rivers. Our descent into the Valle d’Agri takes us down past the hamlet of Marsico Vetere on a beautiful panoramic road counting no less than 13 switchbacks. Once we reach the valley floor, we deviate onto quiet country lanes until we reach the village of Paterno where we stop for coffee.

The top of our next climb marks the border between the regions of Basilicata and Campania. We now cycle down to the little town of Padula in the Vallo Di Diano, where we stay in a beautiful hotel situated next to the Certosa of San Lorenzo. This 14th century abbey ranks among the largest in Italy and contains no less than five porticoed inner courtyards. After a leisurely picnic in the hotel garden, a visit to the abbey is a must. This evening we’ll enjoy a nice dinner at the hotel.

From there, we begin a gradual ascent along the lower slopes of the Cilento Mountains, passing through the villages of Buonabitacolo and Sanza. We then descend to Caselle in Pittari for a coffee break before continuing on to the Bussento River.

The climb kicks up a notch as we near the villages of Torre Orsaia and Roccagloriosa. Taking a well-deserved break in Roccagloriosa for lunch, we then hop back on our bikes to continue the ride. Keeping the vast rock face of Monte Bulgheria to our right, we pass through the hamlets of Acquavena and Bosco before climbing back up again to San Giovanni a Piro nestling on a panoramic ridge above the Gulf of Policastro.

After San Giovanni we can rest our legs along the descent to Lentiscosa and the panoramic hairpins leading down to Marina di Camerota and the Tyrrhenian Coast. What better way to celebrate our arrival than with a well-deserved ice cream? The last part of today’s ride is along the coastal road to the fishermen’s village of Palinuro, where after freshening up in our hotel we head out for dinner in one of the local restaurants.

The last day of our journey takes us north from Palinuro to the Monte Stella promontory and the coastal plain of Paestum. Several short sharp climbs and descents take us up and down along the Cilento Coast, enjoying the most marvellous views of the Med.

From Palinuro we head to the hill-top village of Pisciotta, where we can take a moment to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the views of the coast. After rolling through Pisciotta, we plunge down a steep descent and climb back up to Ascea, before enjoying a sweeping descent into the coastal plain dominated by the remains of the Greek and Roman town of Velia. A short ride along country lanes take us to the Monte Stella promontory and the panoramic coastal road leading through the fishermen’s villages of Pioppi – the centre of the Mediterranean diet, and Acciaroli – where Ernest Hemmingway is claimed to have been inspired for his Old Man And The Sea. After passing through the old centre of Santa Maria di Castellabate we climb up, and then down again on little country roads to the town of Agropoli and its perfectly-preserved old town centre, perched on a rocky promontory around the castle.

The last 10 kms of our journey take us through the coastal plain to the archaeological site of Paestum (UNESCO World Heritage), the location of one of the best-preserved Greek temples outside of Greece itself. We’ll take some time to relax at the hotel before heading out to admire the temples and enjoy our final dinner together.

Understanding Profiles

Use these profiles to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • Ascent / Descent in metres (vertical axis)

Click 'see gradient' to see:

  • Distance in Km (horizontal axis)
  • % Gradient (vertical axis)

Please check the scales on both graphs, and both axes as they both may differ from day to day.

White vertical lines indicate unpaved sections or slightly rougher terrain. Using both graphs, alongside the grading and terrain information provided, will give you a full picture of how flat, bumpy or steep the climbing on your particular tour is going to be. Please keep in mind this is an indicative guide and GPS units and software produce different statistical information.

The Cycling

Terrain

You will journey through three regions from east to west, starting with the coastal plains of Monopoli and progressing to the rolling Murgia plateau, known for its short, gentle ascents. From there, you’ll enter the hills and mountains of Basilicata and Campania, where you’ll face several longer climbs and descents. Finally, you’ll descend onto the rugged Cilento Coast, with its shorter but steeper inclines.

At the start and towards the end of your holiday your cycling experience will focus on riding through and visiting the unique towns and their architecture, some of which are UNESCO Heritage sites. The central part of the ride in Basilicata takes you through vast stretches of wild countryside with few settlements along the way.

When necessary in order to avoid the busy roads, we will take secondary roads through the countryside, where it’s likely we will encounter a variation in the quality of the tarmac. As you travel across Italy, road conditions can vary depending on the geology of the region and relative ‘wealth‘. Therefore road surfaces may not always be of high standards, especially along the Apulian country roads and in the higher parts of the Basilicata mountain ranges. Considering the variety of road surfaces, a bike with a minimum tyre width of 25mm is recommended, and deep section wheels are best to be avoided.

Not extreme but certainly challenging on occasions with some good climbing opportunities

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

Is this suitable for you?

You’re an enthusiast. Road cycling is probably your main hobby and you ride regularly at weekends, staying on the bike for much of the day. You’re in pretty good shape, and you might also participate in cylo-sportive events. You also love a challenge and are looking for a tour with some good climbing, preferably with an opportunity to tick off some famous Tour de France cols, or the like. You’re a competent descender, and you’re not afraid of speed, but you ride safely and within your limits at all times. You understand road etiquette and you’re comfortable riding in a bunch. You might even take a stint at the front of the pack if the need arises.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.

The Essentials

Travel Options

Your tour starts in Monopoli and finishes in Paestum. Group airport transfers are included in the cost of your tour.

To join the airport transfer on arrival you’ll need to arrive into Bari airport (BRI) and depart from Naples airport (NAP).

We will confirm timings for the transfers as flight schedules are available.

Please check with us before making any travel arrangements to ensure we have reached the minimum number required to guarantee your holiday and to make sure your arrangements fit with our scheduled transfers.

Please note If you make travel arrangements that fall outside of the scheduled transfer windows, there may be an additional charge for individual transfers.

Accommodation

Each night we’ll be staying in a carefully selected mixture of 3* and 4* hotels and guesthouses, with en-suite facilities. On two of the nights in the quieter, less touristy areas of Tricarico and Calvello, accommodation is limited, so the group may be split across a few different B&Bs.

Chosen for their location, cuisine, and service we‘re positive you’ll be well looked after and well rested, ready for your ride the next day. Occasionally accommodations will feature a swimming pool.

This holiday is operated on a double/twin-share basis. Single occupancy rooms can be provided for a supplement and are subject to availability at the time of booking.

Bike Hire

Rental bikes will typically be a Giant Defy Advanced 2 or Giant Liv Avail Advanced 2 (for those preferring a women’s specific geometry) – or equivalent, with a carbon frame and hydraulic disc brakes. They are great bikes with good quality components and generally come equipped with at least one bottle cage, a saddle bag and a small pump.

We can also include a helmet which should be requested at time of booking.

Please note that your bike will come with flat pedals as standard, so please do bring your own if you use clip-in pedals.
