Yorkshire is one of the UK’s standout regions for cycling, offering a rich mix of dramatic landscapes, quiet country roads and iconic climbs that have helped put Yorkshire cycling on the map. From rolling farmland to the rugged beauty of the Dales and moorland, the variety of cycling in Yorkshire makes it a compelling destination for all types of riders.
In terms of difficulty, Yorkshire cycling routes are generally best suited to riders who are comfortable with mixed terrain. The Yorkshire Wolds provides some of the more accessible riding, typically graded 2–3, with gentler rolling hills and scenic, steady routes ideal for those seeking a more relaxed pace. In contrast, much of the cycling in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas is more challenging, with grades of 3–4 and a greater concentration of climbs, making them better suited to experienced cyclists.
Long-distance options such as the Way of the Roses combine varied terrain and are achievable for fit leisure cyclists, but still include tougher sections that add a rewarding challenge. Overall, cycle paths in Yorkshire and wider cycling routes offer something for progressing riders, from gentler touring to demanding hill climbs.
