            Why Cycle in Provence?

From the Rhône Valley to the foothills of Mont Ventoux, Provence offers an extraordinary variety of cycling experiences. Gentle routes wind through vineyards, olive groves and fields of purple lavender. Quiet country roads connect historic villages, bustling markets and Roman landmarks. For those seeking a greater challenge, the region is home to one of France's most celebrated road cycling climbs. The dramatic white slopes of Mont Ventoux rise magnificently above the Provençal landscape, drawing cyclists from around the world to tackle its steep slopes.

Our cycling tours in Provence reflect this diversity. Pedal your way through Provence on a self-guided tour exploring villages and vineyards at your own pace, or choose an unforgettable road cycling adventure tackling legendary climbs and spectacular mountain scenery. Immerse yourself in the landscape of Provence and tackle Mont Ventoux on our Le Ventoux a Velo guided holiday or tackle some serious elevation gain on a route that unites iconic climbs, beginning with Mont Ventoux and ending with Alpe d’Huez.

Whatever style of riding you enjoy, Provence combines exceptional cycling with outstanding food, local wines and the relaxed pace of southern France.

Terrain & Choosing the Right Bike

            Choosing the Right Bike

            Leisure Cycling Tours

Provence's leisure cycling routes follow quiet country roads and traffic-free paths, winding through vineyards and olive groves, alongside meandering rivers and visiting picturesque Provençal villages, such as St-Remy-de-Provence, Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and Eygalieres. The terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, making it ideal for relaxed touring and taking time to enjoy the region's markets, cafés and historic sites. Hybrid bikes, touring bikes and e-bikes are all excellent choices for these routes.

            Choosing the right road bike

            Road Cycling Tours

Road cyclists come to Provence for its smooth tarmac, twisting roads and legendary climbs. While Mont Ventoux is the region's best-known challenge it is far from the only road cycling attraction. You can also ride along the steep slopes of dramatic limestone gorges such as the Gorge du Verdon, descend through sweeping bends beneath rocky arches and wind your way up to hilltop villages including one of the most beautiful in France, Moustiers Saint Marie. Ride alongside fields of purple lavender or bright yellow sunflowers. Everywhere you look it’s cinematic quality road cycling. Provence also forms part of our St Malo to Nice and Route des Grandes Alpes road cycling holidays, offering riders the chance to experience this stunning region as part of a longer road cycling adventure.

            Provence FAQs

            Is Provence good for cycling?

Absolutely. Provence is one of France's most popular cycling destinations thanks to its quiet roads, varied terrain and outstanding scenery. Leisure cyclists can enjoy relaxed rides through vineyards, lavender fields and historic villages, while road cyclists are drawn by smooth mountain roads and the legendary climb of Mont Ventoux. Combined with excellent food, a warm climate and welcoming cafés, Provence offers an unforgettable cycling experience.

What fitness level do I need for a Provence cycling tour?

That depends on the tour you choose. Our leisure cycling tours are designed for riders looking to enjoy Provence at a relaxed pace on predominantly flat or gently rolling terrain, with e-bikes available for extra support. Our road cycling tours in Provence are more demanding, featuring longer distances, sustained climbing and iconic mountain ascents such as Mont Ventoux. Each tour includes detailed grading and trip notes to help you choose the right challenge. Download our trip notes or give us a call, our cycling specialists will help you find the right tour for you.

When is the best time to cycle in Provence?

Spring and autumn are particularly popular, with warm sunshine, colourful landscapes and comfortable riding temperatures. If you're hoping to see Provence's famous lavender fields in bloom, the best time to visit is typically between mid-June and mid-August. Summer can be very hot, so early starts when the air is still fresh, or later afternoon rides, are recommended.

Be aware! Mont Ventoux is a mecca for cyclists and hosts numerous events throughout the season, so roads can be busier at certain times. We aim to take these into account when planning our holidays.

Can I hire a bike on cycling tours in Provence cycling tour?

Yes. A range of bikes is available depending on the tour, including hybrid bikes for leisure tours and road bikes for road cycling trips. E-bikes are also available on selected tours, making it easier to enjoy longer rides or rolling terrain.

What makes Mont Ventoux so famous?

Known as the 'Giant of Provence', Mont Ventoux has featured regularly in the Tour de France and is regarded as one of cycling's greatest challenges. With a summit elevation of over 1,900 metres its distinctive white lunar-like summit, long ascent and rich racing history attract cyclists from around the world who want to experience one of the sport's most iconic climbs. Mont Ventoux can be seen from many parts of Provence, as it rises above the otherwise flat landscape, so it can be enjoyed even without having to pedal up it!

I’ve been fortunate enough to have ridden hundreds of days on a gravel bike all around the world and I can safely say that the first day of the Skedaddle Sardinia Cape to Cape trip was my all-time favourite.

A great gravel ride with variable terrain and stunning scenery. Skedaddle have managed to minimise the amount of tarmac riding in favour of much more interesting trails.

An amazing trip exploring Tuscany mostly off-road which opens new vistas and experiences. Riding white gravel across the tops of hills with wide open skies and open hills all around was memorable.

The riding was spectacular. Guides were good-humoured, fun, knowledgeable and lovely to chat to. I am grateful for being trusted to do my own thing and felt that I was still looked after. The flexibility to do this really made my holiday.

Fantastic area for cycling – really good, varied, fun tracks, beautiful places to ride. A mixture of easy riding along rivers and coast plus some challenging hill climbs. Girona and the surrounding area is beautiful.

A most enjoyable trip in a beautiful part of the country that should appeal to a wide range of cyclists, not just gravel biking enthusiasts. Each day offered something different and was rewarding without being too challenging.
