Best time to visit and what to ride
The best time to enjoy a cycling holiday in Scotland is from late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is milder, the days are longer, and the Highlands and coasts are at their most spectacular. Summer is peak season for cycling but also for Scotland’s smallest inhabitant, the midge, a tiny biting flying insect similar to a gnat, but thankfully this is only a small irritation, and one that bike riding helps with because they can’t keep up with your pedalling speed. Midges can’t fly in the wind, anything more than 6mph will keep them away!
For road riders who love to explore our Tour d’Ecosse follows many parts of the NC500 a bucket-list route showcasing dramatic coastline, rugged cliffs, and charming villages but adds over 30 years of Skedaddle expertise, to create a distinct route that highlights hidden roads, remote settlements, and unforgettable landscapes. Riders head north around the Beauly and Dornoch Firths, cross highland loch side roads to the West Coast, and work south along dramatic shorelines. Highlights include Applecross with views of Skye and the epic Bealach Na Ba Pass, before finishing with a coast-to-coast ride from Lochcarron to Inverness.
Scotland’s gravel riding is outstanding, miles of forestry roads, old lanes, ancient paths and trails criss-cross the country. Taking in Scotland’s top gravel destinations Trossachs and Tayside visits Aberfoyle, Aberfeldy and Dunkeld, an international mecca for gravel cyclists. For leisure cyclists the Caledonia Way is an iconic route through the Highlands with history, culture and stunning scenery at every turn.
For a truly special experience cycle the Hebridean Way, startling clear blue seas and golden sandy beaches look almost Caribbean, wildlife abounds and each of the islands has its own distinct character and history.
For those looking for adventure and challenge the Highlands Coast to Coast is one of our longest running mountain bike trips, a real wilderness adventure, with e-MTB options available.
We have a Scottish cycling holiday for everyone; road bikes, gravel bikes, and e-bikes ensure everyone can enjoy Scotland’s stunning and unique landscapes.
