Based on the success of our mountain bike holidays in this region, and in response to popular demand, we introduced a fantastic road cycling holiday in Chile and Argentina. This trip will take you through landscapes of snowcapped volcanoes, deep valleys, shimmering lakes and curious forests of monkey puzzle trees set against the awesome backdrop of the Andes.
Our North to South route begins in Temuco from where we head into the Andes, an interesting region featuring many great hot springs. Climbing over the mountain range we head on through the impressive Las Raices tunnel and on into Argentina.
Turning south through the valleys of Argentina we enjoy quiet roads and cozy accommodation before joining the famous Ruta 40. We take the opportunity for a relaxing rest day in San Martin de los Andes before continuing south on the Ruta de las Siete Lagos. Our last stop in Argentina is the village of Villa La Angostura.
Climbing over the Andes one last time and re-entering Chile, we thread our way past the now quiet volcano and on to the hot springs town of Puyehue. Skirting around the shores of Lago Llanquihue on a special bike lane we stop in Ensenada before a side trip to visit the crashing rapids and waterfalls of Saltos de Petrohue. Our last stop is in Puerto Varas, a great spot to relax and sample the interesting combination of German and Chilean cuisine.
This holiday is the perfect choice for those cyclists looking for a spectacular destination which is accessible to the everyday riders amongst us.

Itinerary

Day 1
Departure:
Non Riding Day

Depart for Chile and Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport Santiago (SCL) arriving the following day.

Day 2
Arrival Chile - Puerto Montt - Puerto Varas
Non Riding Day

Following your overnight flight you will arrive in Santiago, Chile. You will need to clear customs and immigration before heading up to the domestic terminal (just upstairs) to catch your internal Chilean flight to Puerto Montt Airport (PMC), where you’ll be met by your Skedaddle guides for the trip. The hotel is just a 30-minute transfer away in nearby Puerto Varas. Once settled into our hotel, we’ll have a chance to build our bikes and learn more about the trip ahead.

Puerto Varas (known as ‘La Ciudad de las Rosas’ or ‘The City of Roses‘) is a city well known for its German traditions, food and its beautiful natural setting. The town is worth exploring and we get to sample the range of cuisine on offer, from German pastries – especially the kuchen (cake), cookies, chocolates and craft marmalades alongside the quality meats of the south of Chile. A fitting arrival for a truly unforgettable holiday to come.

Day 3
Puerto Varas to Ensenada
40 Miles / 65 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 560 Metres Approx.

This morning, we set off for our first day in the saddle. One of the largest lakes in South America, the incredible scenery of Lago Llanquihue will be the focus of our day as we travel along its black-sand shores, on a special ‘bike only’ lane.

Nestled amidst the pristine wilderness of Chile, this afternoon we visit the Saltos de Petrohue waterfalls. As we watch the water cascading down in front of the grandeur of Osorno volcano, we’ll get a real sense of the beauty of Patagonia and the scenery we’ll be immersed in throughout the next week or so.

Retiring back to the town of Ensenada, we’ll enjoy some traditional Chilean cuisine before settling down as we prepare for a longer day in the saddle tomorrow.

Day 4
Ensenada to Puyehue Hot Springs
53 Miles / 86 Kms Approx. (optional 12 Miles / 20 Kms from Ensenada to Las Cascades)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 750 Metres Approx.

This morning, our adventure begins right from our doorstep as we mount our bikes and pedal along the first, leisurely 20 kilometers or opt for a comfortable ride in the van to reach Las Cascadas. From here, our journey continues along the picturesque shores of Lago Llanquihue, where the majestic silhouettes of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes dominate the horizon, offering us breathtaking vistas.

As the day unfolds, we find ourselves drawn to the soothing embrace of the Puyehue Hot Springs, a haven of relaxation within a grand hotel that has played a pivotal role in shaping the tourism landscape of the region. Here, amidst the expansive pools, we can indulge in a rejuvenating dip, preparing ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead, including the cheeky climb we have awaiting us tomorrow.

Day 5
Puyehue to Villa Angostura
50 Miles / 82 Kms Approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 1,900 Metres Approx.

Leaving Lago Puyehue behind us, our day begins with a big steady climb up and over the Andes Mountain range towards the Argentinian border.

The peak reaches approximately 1300 and is the highest altitude for the trip, representing the border between the two countries. After crossing this natural border, we embark on a thrilling 17-kilometer descent towards the border office, followed by a brief journey to our evening retreat. Before entering the charming resort town of Villa Angostura, we cross a quaint bridge spanning the tranquil, turquoise waters of the Rio Correntoso.

Day 6
Villa Angostura to San Martín de los Andes
 62 Miles / 100 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 1,860 Metres Approx.

We have an early start today as we begin our longest day in the saddle, but well-worth it as we take on one of the most scenic rides of the whole journey as we cycle along the legendary Ruta de las Siete Lagos, Road of the Seven Lakes. This smoother, flatter section of the route gives us a chance to really soak up the views of one of the most popular rides for locals and tourists alike.

After one final push, as we make our last climb of the day we start our winding descent into San Martín de los Andes, giving views over Lago Lacar and the surrounding mountains. San Martin is a real South American treat; get ready to be seduced by its prettiness with plenty of enticing restaurants for a delicious evening meal. With this in mind, once suitably refreshed we set off to explore the town and its array of culinary delights.

Day 7
Rest day in San Martin de los Andes
Non-Riding Day
  • Meals: Breakfast

San Martin de los Andes is the perfect sanctuary for a restful day off the saddle, offering an abundance of options to cater to every traveller. Beyond its picturesque and serene ambiance lies a treasure trove of activities awaiting exploration. Stroll along cobblestone streets, where artisanal shops, charming eateries, and cozy cafes invite you to savour some more of the local flavours amidst glimpses of the town’s historic landmarks.

For those with some energy to spare, venture into the surrounding abundant forest and beautiful azure lakes. Why not give the saddle a ready and explore on foot with a hike in the lush woodlands near Lago Lacar or another of the multitude of activities available.

Our ‘rest day’ is finished off with more exploration of San Martin’s restaurants and a good night’s sleep.

Day 8
San Martín de los Andes to Rahue.
55 Miles / 90 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 1,000 Metres Approx.

Leaving San Martin, our journey begins with a delightful glimpse into the daily rhythm of rural life as we pedal through quaint towns. After covering about 40 to 50 kilometers, our route takes us on a challenging ascent, a 20-kilometer climb that marks a transition in scenery from verdant forests and towns to the rugged edge of the Patagonian Desert. Here, the landscape takes on a drier, more rugged character, offering a stark yet captivating contrast to the lush surroundings we’ve become accustomed to. As our day draws to a close, we take a 40-kilometer transfer along a gravel road to reach Rahue, where the rustic charm of Estancia Quillén Lodge awaits to welcome us with open arms, providing a serene retreat amidst the beauty of Patagonia.

Day 9
Rahue to Villa Pehuenia via Aluminé
27 Miles / 45 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 475 Metres Approx.

Venturing once more into the forest, our day unfolds with a mix of terrain. Following 10 kilometers of smooth tarmac, we embark on a 32-kilometer transfer along gravel roads.

We pedal onward for another 35 kilometers on tarmac, enjoying the smooth, rhythmic hum under our wheels. Today’s ride offers a shorter distance, providing a well-deserved respite before tomorrow’s optional climb. As the afternoon sun casts its golden glow, we arrive at the enchanting village in the forest, Villa Pehuenia. Here we can indulge in a taste of Argentina’s finest ice cream or opt for a refreshing dip in the inviting waters from our lakeside hotel.

Day 10
Villa Pehuenia to Lonquimay, vía Paso Icalma
32 Miles / 52 Kms Approx.  (optional 27 Miles / 45 Kms for pass)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 413 Metres Approx. (Extra 850 Metres Approx - for the optional pass).

Today, we set off on our bikes towards the Chilean border, traversing the stunning landscapes that we have become so delightfully accustomed to. Upon completing the necessary paperwork to enter Chile, our adventure continues as we pedal onwards to the charming town of Icalma.

Icalma Lake holds cultural significance for the Mapuche indigenous people, who have inhabited the region for centuries and continue to celebrate their traditions and heritage in this breathtaking setting. It’s here, amidst the Andean foothills, that we prepare for the next leg of our journey, taking a transfer to Liucura. Along the way, soak in the breathtaking vistas of towering mountains and lush forests that define this remote region.

From Liucura, we will be on the bikes to either pedal the final 40 kilometres to our accommodation in Lonquimay, or for those seeking an extra thrill and a challenge, we can first climb up the Pino Hachado pass. After gaining permission this 22-kilometer ascent to the border with Argentina, offers unparalleled views and a sense of achievement. After completing the climb, we return on the same route to Liucura where we complete the final 40kms before reuniting with the group at our accommodation for the night.

Day 11
Lonquimay to Colonia Suiza (Malalcahuello)
34 Miles / 55 Kms Approx.  (optional 10 Miles / 16 Kms approx climb up to Volcan Lonquimay)
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 1,000 Metres Approx.

Our first 10 kilometers of the day take us towards the Túnel de las Raíces, a historic tunnel dating back to 1929 and stretching an impressive 4,538 meters in length, making it the second longest in South America. Depending on conditions and approval from the tunnel authorities, we can opt to pedal through the tunnel or join the vehicle for a short transfer. Upon emerging from the tunnel, we’ll resume cycling on the other side and continue our journey.

For those seeking an extra challenge, an optional climb to Volcan Lonquimay is available this afternoon, the extra 8 kilometers each way will add 16km to the journey and a satisfying climb.

As we continue our journey through the Andes, the scenery continues to captivate as the high Andean Forest covers the slopes with monkey puzzle trees and forms a great contrast with the towering mountains and snowcapped volcanoes.

Day 12
Malalcahuello to Lautaro
49 Miles / 80 Kms Approx.
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch
  • Ascent: 300 Metres Approx.

Our final day on the bikes and pedalling through the enchanting valley near the majestic volcanoes of Tolhuaca, Lonquimay, and Llaima, we’ll be surrounded by nature’s grandeur at every turn. These volcanoes are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, adding a thrilling touch of geological wonder to our adventure.

This area isn’t just picturesque; it’s a haven for biodiversity, hosting the sprawling National Parks of Conguillío and Tolhuaca, where ancient forests and crystal-clear lakes beckon explorers. And let’s not forget the hidden gems like the National Reserves of Malleco, Malalcahuello, and Nalcas, where rare flora and fauna thrive under the protective canopy of towering trees. After our exhilarating ride, we’ll bid adios to the pedals and take a short transfer (30kms) to Temuco, where we’ll savour our final evening together, reminiscing about the unforgettable sights and experiences we’ve shared on this epic journey.

Day 13
Departure: Temuco Airport
Non-Riding Day
  • Meals: Breakfast

After a last breakfast together, we make the short transfer to Temuco airport and say our goodbyes before boarding our flights home.

The Cycling

Terrain

We will be cycling on both side of the Andes mountain range in the Chile and Argentina Lake District. As well as experiencing a little of the vast Patagonian desert we’ll pass rivers, waterfalls, volcanoes, mountain ranges and of course lakes. That means constant highlights! There aren’t any major elevation changes, and the roads are mainly secondary roads with a generally good surface and soft traffic on most of the days. We‘re going to face some steep but short climbs with fast descents and the road surfaces can be of a lesser quality in places. Great cycling with amazing scenery every day.

Road Cycling Grade

Grade 3: Moderate

45-60 miles / 70-95 kms per day

For riders with experience, good fitness & a decent level of skill

Some features that may be experienced more frequently in a higher grade tour

Most days include a couple of significant climbs

Some long days & some steep to very steep sections

Not for beginners

Our grading guidelines have been carefully created based on our many years of cycling experience, as well as customer feedback from our trips. Of course, if you're still struggling to figure out where you fit on the scale, do feel free to give us a quick call and we'll be more than happy to help!

For more information about our grading system click here.

Is this suitable for you?

You’re definitely not a novice rider, you’re fit, you ride regularly at weekends, sometimes staying on the bike for much of the day, you love your bike! You also enjoy a challenge and if you haven’t already done so you’re keen to attempt a semi-serious to serious mountain pass or two. You’re as comfortable with the prospect of descending from the top of a col as you are with the idea of climbing it and you’re confident that you have the skills to do so safely. You’re not necessarily a “racer” but you can crank up the pace a little when it’s necessary and you don’t mind forgoing a coffee stop if the schedule demands it occasionally. You probably own and use clipless pedals. You have good control of your bike and can take a drink from a water bottle without having to unclip and put your feet on the ground. Whilst you find a full day in the saddle fulfilling you’re not obsessed and as much as you are looking forward to the riding on your holiday, you’re also looking forward to a little local culture and cuisine. Grade 3 would be a good option for you.

For more information about the grading of this holiday in particular, please check out the terrain section which will give you some specifics of what to expect on this tour.

Very well planned and organised, especially on the ground with local staff. All the days were outstandingly good! As a relative newcomer to the game, I felt the routes were well chosen – in that both novices and more experienced riders obviously got a lot from them.

Private Departures

Private Departures

Are you keen to only travel with your family or friends? Struggling to find the right date? Well, we can organise a private departure for this tour and tailor aspects to suit your group's specific needs. Contact our friendly team and we'll help you turn your dream into reality.

The Essentials

Travel Options

We ask that you fly into Puerto Montt airport (PMC). As there are very few direct flights into Puerto Montt from outside Chile you will usually be required to fly into Santiago airport (SCL) first and then take a connecting flight to Puerto Mont airport.

At the end of the trip, you will need to fly back from Temuco airport (ZCO). Like Temuco, direct options are very limited so you will typically need to take a return flight via Santiago.

Group airport transfers are included in the holiday cost and both the arrival and return transfers will be co-ordinated with the group flight schedule. We will provide you with details of suitable flight/arrival/departure schedules as flight timetables become available.

Please check with us before making any travel arrangements to ensure we have reached the minimum number required to guarantee your holiday and to make sure your arrangements fit with our scheduled transfers.

Please note: If you make travel arrangements that fall outside of the scheduled transfer windows, there may be an additional charge for individual transfers.

Accommodation

Accommodation is on a twin/shared basis in a combination of small hotels, lodges, cabañas and family run hospedajes (South American bed and breakfasts), chosen for their location and hospitality. A single room option is normally available on payment of a single room supplement (subject to availability).

Bike Hire

Rental bikes will be aluminium frame road bikes with carbon forks and a 10 speed Shimano group set (as a minimum), generally equipped with at least one bottle cage, a saddle bag and a small pump.

We can also include a helmet which should be requested at time of booking.

Please note that your bike will come with flat pedals as standard, so please do bring your own if you use clipless pedals.
