Self-Guided Leisure Bike Tour

8 days

$1,750 P.P.

This holiday is well-suited to both regular bikes and pedal assist e-bikes, and you can choose to hire either when you book your tour with us. Confident cyclists will enjoy the boost from a battery for those cheeky climbs, and with less effort required on the bike, you’ll have more energy at the end of the day for off-the-bike activities.

Get set for an awesome journey cycling in historic Empordà, one of the oldest wine-making regions in Europe. Thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate and the unique soil composition, surrounded by mountains, growing grapes here is ideal. Ancient farmers used the flat lands for olive trees and the slopes for vineyards and this has characterised the countryside to this day.
From the ancient city of Girona, our route takes us to the coast to enjoy some of the most beautiful spots on the Costa Brava as we weave our way north to Figueras, which was home to Salvador Dalí and where he created a theatrical museum dedicated to surrealist artworks and containing a large number from his personal collection.
In 2005 the influential wine expert Robert Parker thrust Empordà wines into the global spotlight and thanks to the hard work of many local wineries, the area now holds the certification of "Origin Designation of Empordà". As well as a wine tasting experience at one of the local wineries, there will be plenty of opportunity to sample the local wines alongside delicious local food enroute.
The tour, tailored for regular cyclists, seamlessly blends serene journeys on quiet secondary roads with scenic stretches along well-maintained unpaved paths. With days averaging 40 km in length and minimal elevation challenges, this cycling promises an accessible and delightful experience with plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful coastal and argriculatural landscapes alongside the delicious cuisine of the region.

  • Pedal through the stunning landscapes of Empordà, Catalonia’s hidden gem
  • Ride through vineyards and discover the wine of this D.O. region
  • Immerse yourself in local culture with museums that explore everything from fishing and cork making to anchovies, an ancient flour factory, a marmalade paradise, and an olive oil mill
  • Marvel at the Dalí Museum, a surrealistic masterpiece
  • Grab a coffee, kick back by the sea, and soak in the sun for some well-deserved relaxation
  • Visit a local winery and sample their produce

The Cycling

Your route will be a mixture of traffic free cycleways (Vias Verdes) and quiet roads, shared with vehicle traffic. Following the Vias Verdes (a mixture of hard packed gravel tracks and asphalt), the route will take you through relatively flat terrain, with some hills and undulations. Although the route is relatively easy going, opting for an e-bike would make it even more relaxed and leisurely, if you fancied that extra boost. The route is not suitable for road bikes.
