This tour is well-suited to both regular bikes and pedal assist e-bikes, and you can choose to hire either when you book your tour with us. Confident cyclists will enjoy the boost from a battery for those cheeky climbs, and with less effort required on the bike, you’ll have more energy at the end of the day for off-the-bike activities.
This cycling holiday in the UK allows you to experience the quieter parts of the Lake District with ease. Over 7 days of varied cycling you’ll visit some of the prettiest parts of the Lakes and without doubt the most dramatic scenery in England. Cycling on quiet roads, designated cycleways and unsurfaced tracks you’ll explore the very best the area has to offer.
Superb local inns and cafes provide delicious lunches and refreshments en-route and with both Keswick and Ambleside providing options aplenty for your evening meals and post-ride pints you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Your base for the first few days is the bustling town of Keswick from where you’ll ride each day. The first highlight is the gorgeous Newlands Valley with views of Cat Bells that acts as a great taster for the routes to follow.
Enjoyable routes over the next days take you around the immense Bassenthwaite Lake and Dodd Wood (keep your eyes out for ospreys!) Heading a little further out from Derwent Water along the traffic-free Keswick to Threlkeld railway path, you also make your way to Mungrisdale during a scenic ride that affords great views of both Skiddaw and Blencathra.
Mid-point you'll leave Keswick and head south to your next base in Ambleside. Your journey there is fabulous and includes the historic Castlerigg Stone Circle, Thirlmere and the gorgeous Grasmere.
Your first ride from Ambleside takes in Wray Castle, Lake Windermere, Esthwaite Water and the picturesque village of Hawkshead where you can visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery Museum. Your penultimate day takes you into the timeless Langdale valley, with your final ride taking in Wordsworth’s homes of Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage in Grasmere, ending your week in style.
Arrival at your accommodation in Keswick where you’ll be based for the next three nights. Should you be travelling by car you’ll be able to leave your vehicle here. If you prefer to travel by train we can arrange to meet you at Penrith Station which is situated around 20 miles away (approx 30 mins transfer time).
Depending on your time of arrival you can make the most of the day and enjoy an optional ride – a classic Lakeland route in Newlands Valley. Situated to the west of Derwent Water, with the lovely Swinside Inn situated en-route it makes for a great introduction to your time in the Lakes. Although close to the popular Cat Bells, our route goes through a relatively quiet and rarely visited part of the Lake District and is the perfect warm-up ride.
At a convenient time, our Skedaddle Representative will introduce you to the route options you’ll be enjoying during the trip, fit you with your bike (should you be renting), and be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
A great tour of Bassenthwaite Lake — the only official “lake” in the Lake District as you discover this amazing part of Cumbria.
On the way out of Keswick you will pass by Dodd Wood, a sanctuary for Ospreys and a great area for spotting red squirrels, so keep your eyes peeled! You loop around the lake via Embleton, passing the Lakeland Distillery and there are some superb Lakeland inns to acquaint yourself with during what is a great day’s cycling, before you head back to Keswick along quiet country lanes.
Today’s ride takes you east riding from Keswick past the tip of Derwent Water. With Skiddaw (931m) and Blencathra (also know as Saddleback due to its shape) dominating the skyline to your left, you’ll follow the Sustrans Coast to Coast (C2C) route up to the small village of Threlkeld before continuing on to Mungrisdale.
It’s a lovely part of the Lakes with the nearby hills of Bowscale Fell, Bannerdale Crags and Souther Fell close-by and should you be lucky enough you might even come across some Lake Fell Ponies on this section of the ride. The ponies have been roaming these fells since prehistoric times and were used by the Vikings for ploughing and as pack animals thereafter.
The 300-year-old Horse and Farrier Inn in Threlkeld is a great place for lunch or a late afternoon ale before the final leisurely leg of today’s route back to Keswick.
Today you leave behind the beautiful town of Keswick and head south to your next base in the equally delightful Ambleside.
Your journey starts with a short climb out of Keswick to Castlerigg Stone Circle. With its panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, hills and mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat it’s well worth a stop here to admire the stones and their dramatic and beautiful location.
Continuing on through St John’s in the Vale you’ll ride down the western side of Thirlmere Reservoir, before joining the cycle path alongside the A591, for a short climb up and over Dunmail Raise. You’ll then rejoin the carriageway and head into the next valley and the gorgeous village of Grasmere.
Nestling at the foot of some spectacular fells and with its own lake, Grasmere has numerous small shops, pubs and excellent cafes where you’ll be able to treat your tastebuds.
Britain’s most famous poet William Wordsworth lived here at Dove Cottage, with his sister and it is where he produced the majority of his greatest and best-loved poems. The cottage is now a great little museum and well-worth a visit, either today or on your final day of cycling from Ambleside.
With no motorboats on this quieter lake it is a popular spot for swimming (though it’s chilly!) and in the summer months you can also hire rowing boats on the lake.
Your last stretch of cycling sees you enjoying some stunning lakeside scenery and you’ll end the ride in Ambleside which then serves as your base for the next few nights.
The National Trust’s Wray Castle is the first big stop on today’s route. The imposing Victorian neo-gothic castle hosted the first meeting between Beatrix Potter and social reformer Hardwicke Rawnsley inspiring a friendship and campaigning spirit that would lead to the protection of the Lake District’s landscapes for future generations.
Continuing on the route down the western shores of Lake Windermere to Far Sawrey there will be a short sharp climb to reach Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s former home where you can enjoy the gardens and Peter Rabbit’s favourite carrot patch!
The return cycle takes you past Esthwaite Water and to the picturesque village of Hawkshead, famous for its traditional wooden framed buildings and an ideal place to stop for lunch and visit the Beatrix Potter Gallery Museum, which displays original illustrations from her famous storybooks.
Langdale and its Pikes are the spectacular backdrop for today’s ride. The route takes you through the spectacular U-Shaped Great Langdale with awe-inspiring views up Dungeon Gill Waterfall to Harrison Stickle.
A short winding climb to Blea Tarn rewards the effort with stunning views and a gentle descent into the beautiful valley of Little Langdale. Arguably there is no more spectacular sight in England than these pretty valleys and gushing waterfalls surrounded by the classic mountains of the Lake District. There’s no shortage of pubs with plenty of character. From The Britannia in Elterwater in the heart of the village, to the National Trust’s Sticklebarn providing tasty fuel and refreshments along the way.
Whilst it’s time to pack your bags today, if you still have the legs for one last ride we’ve got another gem that packs yet another punch of picture postcard views of lakes, hills and pretty villages and another Cumbrian icon!
We can’t promise daffodils but you have a choice of two of William Wordsworth’s homes at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount if you are looking for an insight into the life of the romantic poet.
Today’s ride should be fuelled by the famous Grasmere Gingerbread. Part biscuit, part cake it has been made in the village since 1854 and your route takes you conveniently past their door in case you want to indulge in a sweet treat!
As your trip comes to an end we’ll transfer you back to your start point at Keswick, or on to Penrith Train Station for your onward journey.
White vertical lines indicate unpaved sections or slightly rougher terrain.
Please check the scales on both graphs, and both axes as they both may differ from day to day.
GPS units and navigation softwares produce different statistical information based on a number of different factors, so please keep in mind the information we’re providing here is meant to be an indicative guide only.
Gradients in particular can be difficult to measure consistently, and sometimes steepness shown can vary as much as 5-10% from what’s signposted on the ground.
Using both graphs, alongside the grading and terrain information provided, should however give you a good idea of how flat, bumpy or steep the climbing on your particular tour is going to be.
Register your interest and we'll keep you up-to-date on departures, availability, accommodation and all the amazing experiences we have in store on this trip.
The Lake District is known for its rugged beauty, but also its hills! We’ve handpicked the routes for their quiet roads and beautiful scenery but you can expect the routes to be undulating with some short steep climbs.
You will be riding on a mixture of quiet country lanes and purpose built cycleways, and some off-road sections along more gravelly and muddy tracks. There are some short sections on busier roads and on a few days there are a few short sections of rough track.
We recommend either a hybrid bike, gravel bike, or a mountain bike fitted with semi-slick tyres, as parts of this route are not suitable for a road bike. If you’re wanting to spend more time exploring the sights along the way, then an e-bike is perfect to cover the miles a little quicker. A great boost, particularly for those steeper climbs. Please note – E-bikes are normally heavier than standard hybrid bikes, so you will need to be comfortable handling the bike on loose surfaces and manoeuvring the bike at the occasional gate. Bike Hire
If you would like to rent a bike we have hybrid, gravel and electric bikes available.
The hybrid bikes are generally Giant Roam (male frame) or Liv Rove (female frame) with flat bars and semi-slick tyres. They are set up with a rear rack, two panniers and at least one bottle cage.
The gravel bikes are generally Giant Revolt (male frame) or Liv Devote (female frame) with drop-bars, aluminium frames, carbon forks, and 700×38c gravel-specific tyres fitted with inner tubes. They are set up with a rear rack, two panniers and at least one bottle cage.
The electric bikes are generally Giant E+ pedal assist bikes with flat bars, step through frames, semi-slick tyres, and batteries suitable for the daily distance on this holiday. They are set up with a rear rack and two panniers and they will either have a bottle cage or you will be able to store a water bottle in your pannier bag.
When choosing your hire bike, we recommend selecting the type of bike you’re used to riding and feel most comfortable and confident on, whether that’s a flat-bar bike or a drop-bar setup. If you’re unsure about anything, or would like to chat through the available options, please do give us a call.
All of our hire bikes have a wide range of gears, hydraulic disc brakes and offer a comfortable riding position. All bikes have inner tubes and come equipped with a small seat-post bag containing a puncture repair kit, a multitool and a spare tube, as well as a bike pump. We will also provide a handlebar phone mount (if required), and a bike lock (one between two bikes). Please note, given the variety of shapes and sizes of on-bike luggage and the fact the mechanisms for fitting them vary, we aren’t able to safely accommodate customers’ own frame bags or on-bike luggage on our hire bikes.
We are also able to provide helmets. If you’d like one, please request this at the time of booking. You are welcome to bring along your own saddle and / or own pedals if renting a hybrid or gravel bike, but please let us know in advance if you plan to do so. Please note, all our hire bikes come with flat pedals as standard.
If you are planning to bring your own bike, please let us know the make and model and we can check its suitability.

Difficult to choose our favourite day...
The first ride, when we arrived for me was a real wow ride. It was short as every one had just travelled up, which was spot on. The roads were quiet, the scenery spectacular… Overall I had a super holiday, the two bed and breakfasts we stayed at were excellent. The breakfasts at both places was superb. The hosts were very friendly and very welcoming and I would definitely stay at both places again.

The whole route was wonderful
Lots of good days but I think it might have been the first full day (second day out) that was the biggest highlight. Honestly, the whole route was wonderful.

Every day was excellent!
It’s hard to choose a favourite day, every day was excellent but probably Day 6 – Ambleside to Langdales. The views were spectacular. This was our second Saddle Skedaddle holiday and we will definitely be booking another self-guided leisure holiday.
The accommodation was excellent at both locations. The ride past Castlerigg, St John’s Vale, along Troutbeck and the approach to Grasmere was outstanding. COVID issues were well dealt with by our hosts – no problems there. Always very impressed with the customer care!
Annette, UK
Excellent!
My favourite day was day three that went from Keswick to Ambleside by diversion along Thirlmere. It was breathtaking.. As was the Mountain road up to Big Langdale.. There were so many wonderful sights that it was very difficult to pick a favourite.

Excellent service
Everything up to Skedaddle standard. Loved day 6 going up to Langdale.

Excellent
Excellent exposure to the beautiful Lake District. Routes were appropriate for experienced cyclists, with enough challenges to be interesting. E-bikes were needed by us older riders (late 70s, 80).
