Itinerary
- Meals: Dinner
Today is set aside to allow you to arrive into Alnmouth at your convenience. You will meet your leader and the rest of the group, and enjoy a leisurely evening meal at Nether Grange.
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
- Ascent: 400 Metres Approx.
After an energising breakfast, we’ll be hopping into the saddle and pedalling north from Alnmouth. We’ll initially head up the coast through Boulmer, inland past Longhoughton then onward to the quaint fishing village of Craster (famed for its kippers). From here we’ll head further north, past Dunstanburgh Castle, built in the 14th century by the powerful Thomas of Lancaster, reputedly second in influence only to the King of England himself.
We soon head inland to the village of Embleton, where we’ll enjoy further views of the castle. Next we ride south to the attractive market town of Alnwick, dominated by its famous Norman castle and gardens, home to one of the country’s largest collections of European plants.
We then continue for a few more miles heading back to our accommodation at the coast, fresh North Sea air and a well deserved cuppa or pint as you like! The direction of this ride may depend on the prevailing winds.
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
- Ascent: 250 Metres Approx.
Our second ride takes us further north to Holy Island. We’ll transfer you and your bike to Lindisfarne, an important early centre of Christianity in England and home to Northumberland’s patron, Saint Cuthbert.
After a visit to the priory, we head back along the causeway and wind our way along quiet country lanes towards Bamburgh, with its impressive castle perched high above the surrounding area, and bordered by the sea. From here we continue south to Seahouses where our transport awaits to bring us back to Alnmouth.
The direction of this ride may be dependent on tide-times. If the tide does not allow us to cross to Holy Island, you will never the less have the chance to cycle North up through Seahouses and Bamburgh, and admire the views across to Lindisfarne Castle, high on an outcrop of the Northumbrian Whin Sill and ready to fend off Scottish or Viking invaders!
- Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner
- Ascent: 300 Metres Approx.
Today we’ll experience another side of Northumberland. We’ll still get to enjoy some of the rich medieval history, but the landscape on today’s ride is also shaped by more recent activity – coal mining.
Our final ride takes us south on Sustrans Route 1, where we ride through Warkworth (admiring yet another mighty castle!), Amble and along the spectacular and peaceful Druridge Bay. Druridge is a seven mile stretch of beach and sand dunes, and is today part of the national heritage coast. This area consists of land reclaimed from a large opencast mine which once dominated the countryside and the lives of local people. Our route then takes us inland through the villages of Widdrington, Stobswood, Acklington and Guyzance before looping round back to Alnmouth, where we’ll have a final celebratory evening meal together.
- Meals: Breakfast
Today we’ll have a leisurely breakfast together, and with plenty of miles in our legs and memories made, you’ll set off on your onward journeys home.

The Cycling
Terrain
Mixture of generally flat and undulating terrain on paved river and seaside promenades, minor urban roads, quiet lanes and purpose built Cycleways.
There are a few off-road sections, with tracks across grassy fields or farm roads. Being a National Cycle Network route, there are no “technical” off-road sections. Hybrid bikes are most suitable.

Northumberland – Alnmouth uses a part of the National Cycle Network, a route from the charity, Sustrans, who are working to make it easier for everyone to cycle in the UK. Skedaddle will donate to Sustrans for every mile that you and others ride on this route with us. If you fancy donating more to Sustrans, you can choose to make your own donation for the development of the National Cycle Network when you make a booking with us.

Is this suitable for you?
Maybe you have recently got into cycling and would like to do more over consecutive days, or maybe you‘re looking for a more energetic alternative to your usual vacation? If you’re looking for an opportunity to try some quiet roads, cycle paths or some accessible, cycle friendly routes these trips might be for you. You’ll come across some gently undulating terrain and the odd cheeky challenge, so we’d generally expect those on a Grade 2 trip to ride their bikes relatively frequently at home, perhaps commuting to work or heading out for some leisurely rides at the weekend.

Hazel, Nottingham, UKThanks to all the team for a lovely time...The trip over to Holy Island & following Route 1 to Seahouses was a highlight of ours, closely followed by Day 1 when we cycled to Warkworth & Druridge Bay. We will definitely join another Skedaddle holiday and we just want to say many thanks to all the team for a lovely time.
Helen, Northumberland, UKFar exceeded my expectations...This was my first Skedaddle holiday and it far exceeded my expectations – brilliant organisation; great hire bike; well planned routes with all details thought of; excellent informative & friendly guides; exceptional and imaginative food, catering for dietary restrictions. Looking forward to planning my next trip!
Very comfortable hotel, friendly and helpful staff including a very hands-on manager, comfortable and spacious room, excellent food, facilities and activities. I didn’t expect such plentiful food & drinks on the rides catering for all tastes – couldn’t fault anything about it! My favourite day was the first day with a longer ride and fantastic scenery – with a very challenging headwind! I really enjoyed all the rides and would have liked the holiday to have been a couple of days longer! The bike was even better than the one I have at home! The tour guides were were brilliant at leading, organising, catering and were always cheerful and helpful. Already recommended and planning a holiday with Skedaddle!
Jenny, Cheshire, UKI would certainly recommend it to a friend. This was my first cycling holiday and I was so impressed with the organisation of it from booking to delivery. I would certainly recommend it to a friend. I was impressed with the organisation of this holiday and the quality of the information provided. I cannot speak highly enough of the service provided – this holiday was such good value.
Our guides excelled themselves in looking after us. It was a five start service all the way! All the cycling days were excellent. The routes were interesting with plenty of sight s to see along each route. The use of quiet roads with minimal traffic made it a wonderful experience. I was so impressed by the quality and presentation of the food provided during tea breaks and lunch.
I took my own bike which developed a fault with the gears during the first day so was provided with a spare bike. I was very impressed with the quality of the hire bikes and would definitely hire a bike on future holidays.
I was so impressed by our guides. Our tour leader was friendly, helpful, sensible, knowledgeable, encouraging and supportive. He went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed the rides and had a great holiday. I was so impressed. Our second tour guide was supporting on this tour and was equally friendly, helpful, sensible, knowledgeable, encouraging and supportive. He also went out of his way to ensure we had a good holiday. The Transport vehicle was well stocked with snacks and food/drink for lunch. It was always at the break stop on time and, when transferring with bikes, was a great way to make sure we got to where we needed to be with ease.
Norma, Warwickshire, UKThis holiday was wonderful. This holiday was wonderful. It couldn’t have been better – everything perfect and it didn’t rain! The service provided was so efficient. The guides were really helpful – they picked me up from station and took me to my Airbnb after. I hired a bike, and the new bike I was provided was very good – I never got saddle sore! The accommodation was a beautiful house with a lovely big bedroom and bathroom, with sea views. So clean and comfortable.
Every day was a beautiful route but I did particularly enjoy Holy Island on the second day. We had a great tour leader who was very caring, particularly when I was behind on the first day – he was always checking on me. Very knowledgeable of area and made it really interesting. His assistant was also very good, and both provided great refreshments. There was so much delicious food,I haven’t lost a pound!
Catherine, London, UKI feel a more confident cyclist for it!This was the first time I’ve used your company and I was very impressed with the service before and after. I thoroughly enjoyed it; I feel a more confident cyclist for it. Very friendly atmosphere within the group and from the guides. Also, as a vegan traveller, I felt very well looked after and people went to lot of trouble for me which I much appreciated, you have great staff.
Christine, Gloucestershire, UKIt really did exceed my expectations! The cycling was sometimes a challenge so I totally switched off from my usual challenges. The other people were interesting and friendly and I think we were all supportive of each other. I enjoyed the camaraderie in the group (which was encouraged by the guides too).
Guides were both very enthusiastic and wanted us to enjoy the day and the surroundings. They encouraged me to keep going and complete the routes. As I had not been cycling so much in the previous weeks because of a fracture, I appreciated their encouragement.
Hazel, UKI'll certainly be back for more Skedaddling!Thank you to our guides for a most enjoyable weekend of cycling, to all the office team for their excellent organisation. I’ll certainly be back for more Skedaddling!
Karen, LeicestershireSkedaddle is a professional, discerning cycle holiday group that has it's riders at the heart of what they offerExcellent and well organised! Day three was my favourite. The route was very cycle friendly, and was so scenic. All days had great views and stops, actually. Transport and hospitality very good and I was pleasantly surprised at the lovely hotel and fabulous room allocated to me. Very comfortable indeed. The hills on day two were harder than undulating. But day one in Alnwick for the cafe stop was wonderful, and day two was incredible as a ride to Lindisfarne across the causeway, a delight to ride on.
